RE: red house painters????? | from Rob SFeb 05 2003 - 23:14
both of the OWEN albums are worth getting. They sound like KOZ solo and Ocean beach. I knda like 'em, they are alil sweeter than red house... but still good.

c, i also like the SEAWORTHY album....and i acquired the ANTARCTICA album after someone on this site (probably you) mentioned it on my "favorite ever album" thread. thanks.
Also check out Rivulets. The self-titled one. It's on Low's label Chaikickers. Supposed to be a new one out in March too....
Awww.... :-)
The first (and only) time I've seen RHP was at the Sub Pop showcase at SXSW 2001 with one of my editors: I forget which venue it was but it was packed, hot, loud and smoky. As is customary for my Austin sojourns I'd inhaled too many fags and downed too much booze. I was fighting my way through the crowd to go outside to get some air and passed out en route. One of the guys from Nebula (stupid stoner-rock band from Seattle) picked me up and helped me to the back room and asked me if my head hurt because evidently I'd banged it really hard. All I could think about was my ass, which smarted like a mother fuck! Anyway, I wobbled back in (dreading the trip to the emergency room that a bruised or broken tailbone would've meant) right before the Red House Painters walked on and found a nice spot near the stage, where I proceeded to bawl like a tard through their whole set, so riveting that it was.
Either that, or it was just my ass...
I saw the Red House Painters in June of 2001. They were scary good in NYC, lemme tell you. Some poor, sweet girl was waiting to hear "Katy Song" all night and she almost fainted when they finally played it.
Wunnerful night.

Hmmm...I've only heard of one of those. I'll have to check them out. Thanks, C.
i agree with alex - most of the above are great but a little obvious. here's a few that seemed to be overlooked:
ARNOLD - Hillside
BLACK WATCH - the king of good intentions, jiggery pokery
TREMBLING BLUE STARS - her handwriting, alive to every smile
ANGELS OF LIGHT - how i loved you
ANTARCTICA - 81:03
NATIONAL SKYLINE - (anything)
SEAWORTHY - the ride
MAHOGANY - dream of a modern day
COMSAT ANGELS - sleep no more
CRISPY AMBULANCE - plateau phase
CHAMELEONS - strange times
the list goes on and on...
This is kind of funny. Thanks for all of the great suggestions guys, but I already own all but a couple of those albums. Oh well, all is good. I have enough new Soul Whirling Somewhere music (new to me, I should say) to keep me occupied for a very long time. Cheers!
and don't forget joy division "closer", soulwhirlingsomewhere "hope was" and P/A "mystery motion" and "TAPS"
i'm glad he cheered up a bit, but we'll agree to disagree
you want sadder darker material than down colourful hill ? crikey,
i suggest low, spain "the blue moods of ? ", codienes "whiite birch" (sublime), and nico's marble index ( a very important record )
and lou reeds berlin, might like that, quite minimal, the bed, cracking tune, little bit dark though
eno's ambient works as well maybe, 1 and 2 and music for films, also the second half of before and after science
I must say that Alex has a point. Why do all these guys have to get happy?
I'm with you Alex.
Maybe I didn't phrase that right. I LOVE "What's Next to the Moon" and other recent albums, but I REALLY LOVE his older stuff because I like sadder, darker material more. And I DON'T like it when an artist sticks to the exact same style album after album. I just wish he had ventured into a style even darker and more down-tempo instead of brighter and more up-tempo. I really don't think his lyrics have as much power as they used to either, no matter how I try to look at it. But, of course, lyrics are a subjective topic for argument being that their impact upon each person they reach differs according to his or her personality, moods, life experiences, etc.
i disagree, i like it when artists move on and do what they want instead of staying in their old style to please "stuck in the mud" fans. i also thought whats next to the moon was astonishingly good, and id like him to do what he wants to do next
I agree, JR. Although I enjoy all the RHP/Kozelek material, I wish he had stuck with his "Down Colorful Hill"-ish style.
well at least that's some kind of news. i think i'll stick to 'down colorful hill' a little longer. along with one of the two untitled albums. i like the one with uncle joe on it the most.
I think there's another solo album coming out this year.
Whatever he does, I hope he doesn't do too many more covers. I like what he does with them, but his songs are so much better.
Funny jokes here. Actually, what IS he up to now? will there be another record for RHP or solo album?
and his real name is actually Ramon
He likes tasty schoolgirls.
His personality doesn't really seem like the one in his music.
he just celebrated his 84th birthday and is still going strong!
I'm watching him right now with my binoculars.
hey i was just wondering if anyone has sseen mark kozelek? i wonder if his personality is as good as "his" music? how old is that dude?
