When I heard about the death in Stereolab, I felt really sad. I saw them in Pittsburgh a couple years ago and it is truly tragic.

Goodbye Emperor Tomato Ketchup... :-( | from susan331Dec 13 2002 - 15:05

From Billboard:

"Stereolab multi-instrumentalist Mary Hansen died Monday after she was hit by a car in a London bicycling accident. Hansen, a native of Brisbane, Australia, joined the band a year after its 1991 formation. She was 36 years old.

'It is with great regret and deep sadness that we announce the death of Mary," posted Martin Pike, who co-owns Stereolab's Duophonic Super 45's imprint with founding members Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier, on Stereolab's official Web site.

'The suddenness of her death has shocked the band," the surviving members of Stereolab said in an official statement. 'Mary was a special person. Our thoughts are with her family and friends who will miss her greatly. Mary was born in Maryborough, Brisbane, and her funeral will take place there next week.'

Hansen first appeared on 1992's "LoFi" single and all subsequent releases, including such acclaimed discs as 1994's "Mars Audiac Quintet" and 1996's "Emperor Tomato Ketchup." In addition to work with Stereolab, Hansen has appeared on discs by Moonshake, the High Llamas, Mouse On Mars, and Brokeback.

Stereolab released eight full-length albums in the past decade; its most recent, "Sound-Dust" (Elektra) debuted at No. 11 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart in September 2001. The group has been at work on a new studio set which is expected out next fall."

I don't know how many of you are fans of StereoLab but I'm totally bummed out because on DEC 9th, Mary the backup singer and main guitarist was killed in a car accident. I just saw them last year in NYC at Irving Plaza, truly amazing performance. But she sang backup and harmony for virtually all the songs since the start of the band. Makes me sad to think something like that could happen to Jeff or Bjork. I know it's happened to others recently but not to music i truly cared about.
