RE: favorite song of all time?? | from bkahunaMar 08 2003 - 08:40

Thanks to both JB and Micah for the full update on Hum. Eight Miles High and Love Will Tear Us Apart always give me chills. Minneapolis had a pretty good thing going there for a while - Husker Du, Replacements, Magnolias, etc. And I agree with Sam, Sugar put out some terrific stuff. Beaster with Tilted and JC Auto absolutely rocks. Listening to Tilted now.

and St. Pere (drummer) is into drugs.......... ( works in pharmaceuticals!~)

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from micahMar 07 2003 - 09:29

Regarding Hum:
talbott the singer is in Centaur.
lash the guitarist is in Glifted.
dimpsey the bassist is in National Skyline.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from Sam SMar 07 2003 - 05:24

Methinks Hum broke up +/- 5 years ago. I agree with bkahuna's post above, as well as whoever the poster with exquisite taste was who mentioned the Hüsker Dü version of "Eight Miles High." I'll add "Up In The Air" and the live version of "Celebrated Summer" along with a rotating list of about 20 others by the Hüskers, as well as "If I Can't Change Your Mind" by Sugar. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by JD also figures prominently, as does "Couldn't Get Ahead" by The Fall.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from bkahunaMar 06 2003 - 20:17

I have been listening to Three Sheets...nearly every morning and always marvel at Stare at the Sky, so thank you Val E.Y. I would add Breathe from Three Sheets and Only Maybe from The Bayonet EP(The Worm is a close 2nd). Or Creep from The Palms EP.
Micah, what happened to Hum?

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from DeniseMar 06 2003 - 18:33

Jeff...This is definetly a great idea. How soon do you think it'll happen??

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from jeffMar 06 2003 - 16:02

yes i could find some ditties from that period that didnt make it on to "we were young.....

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from michelMar 06 2003 - 15:18

yesterday's unwinding is my alas fav. has the same feel to it as my forbidden fav. apricots. they're love songs the way i hear em, if you must put them all on one, (which i would hate to see happen, but ok i'll go with the flow) make it then a wannahave for all of us long time nutcases by putting on some outtakes will you jeff?

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from Val Edward YumMar 06 2003 - 02:44

Took me ages to adjust to the different style of Alas. I just couldn't find any songs/dynamics in there but now I love it. Not my favourite but the warmest, cosiest Idaho album. Stare at the sky is from 3 sheets and I would say Bayonet EP is pretty different whereas Forbidden is like a sister record to Alas.
As for the cover:
White background, Jeff wears all red and has pigtails, John wears all white??
I think I'm onto something...

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from scoobidooMar 06 2003 - 00:43

To answer your question Micah, I have met Thomas Morr six months ago and this is a part of the interview I've made with him.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from Alex N.Mar 05 2003 - 13:44

"Jump Up" is definitely a favorite. I love Jeff's vocals on it. I think one CD with "The Forbidden" and "Alas" would be good. I think the end of "The Forbidden" would be an okay transition into the beginning of "Alas". A silver cover would fit nicely with the music on both records. I have never heard "Bayonet", so I would have no idea how it would fit with the other two CDs. I was told that it was on the loud side, though, which obviously wouldn't quite fit in. About "Stare at the Sky", I always thought it would sound good on "Alas".

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from micahMar 05 2003 - 13:19

scoobidoo, morr is going to rerelease pygmalion?? if so, that's great news, and a long time coming. pygmalion and blue day should both be rereleased, as should swervie's ejector seat reservation and raise. i think franklin's label for toshack highway was considering it, weren't they? anyway....

idaho - i won't even bother
slowdive - waves
hum - if you are to bloom, apollo
catherine wheel - crank, ma solituda
and...never mind, this will take too long

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from JR OlssonMar 05 2003 - 12:18

oh and i forgot. the demo version of 'jump up' is just so goddamn good. that was the first idaho song i ever heard. I LOVE the sound of that version and i think it's better than the one on the record. probably because of the raw sound and the way jeff sings on it. i downloaded it from this site. along with 'much closer now'.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from JR OlssonMar 05 2003 - 12:12

I agree with Scoobidoo. A double cd of course. and yes jeremy stare at the sky is amazing. like most songs from alas. only in the desert is another favourite. alas could just be the best record ever released.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from jeremyMar 05 2003 - 09:09

I'll second 'Tensile'from Alas as one of my favourites, and a couple of songs from the Forbidden ep, too. They have a kind of quiet, rhythmically repetitive Bedhead feel to them, imho. I like many of the more electric, feedbacky ones, too, esp. Stare at the Sky.

ALas part II | from ScoobidooMar 05 2003 - 09:08

Really Great Idea, don't forget to include the Bayonet EP too! Personnaly, I think the artwork should be strictly different from the originals. and in the same time, maybe you should make a double cd because Alas and the forbiden EP are quiet different to in term of music.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from jeffMar 05 2003 - 08:02

we will release alas again for sure...i like the way this record has aged....we may stick it with the forbidden EP....does anyone think that’s a bad idea. ? ..i wouldn’t really know how to tastefully represent the artwork from each CD if this were the case...it would be a lot more economical to release these together like this

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from DeanMar 05 2003 - 03:54

Run but you ran!

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from JR OlssonMar 05 2003 - 02:51

isn't 'tensile' off of alas as well? that is my fav song.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from scoobidooMar 05 2003 - 00:30

I think I was lucky to find Alas in a bizarre record shop three years ago, and I realize that it's certainly the Idaho album that turns the most regularly in my cd player. Beautiful and certainly the most quiet too, I've always thought that this album was too short. Mr Martin, did you had some other song from this period (excepted what we can find on WWUAWNTM)? Alas should be definitely re-released. It's a crime.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from Alex N.Mar 04 2003 - 16:51

I agree. It's definitely the best song on "Alas".

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from just passing byMar 04 2003 - 15:40

number 3 off ALAS. I think it's called "you'll get down to the bottom of this." I'm not sure if that's right (I know this is bad). btw, if you never really paid much attention to it, give it a shot (and turn the bass up)

I like everything about it and it never gets old, so I guess it qualifies.

Late to the party, but I would add "Carry the Zero" by Built to Spill, definitely agree with Husker Du's version of "Eight Miles High", would toss in Husker's "Celebrated Summer" and offer Sonic Youth's "Teenage Riot".

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from Rob sDec 12 2002 - 23:18

Hey Ephraim
C-clamp are very rad indeed. "Longer Waves" is a pearler. I think you can only buy it at the OHIO GOLD site. Good luck.

Idaho- To Be the One, Dum Dum, Levitate, Casa Mia, (can't remember other song names right now)

Red House Painters- Katy Song (I can't believe no-one else has listed it), Medicine Bottle, Helicopter, Brockwell Park, Drop, Japanese To English, etc.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from ephraimNov 19 2002 - 03:14

it's funny someone mentioned c-clamp. i have been trying to track down "longer waves" for the last couple of weeks because i lost my copy. i'm jonesin'! it's neat to think someone else is diggin' the same record that i am - at the same time i am - years after it has been released. deep green-great song! not my favorite, though. sebadoh - skull. if i had to pick.

oh, and also "pretty ballerina". can't forget that one. a totally heartbreaking song.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from christianOct 11 2002 - 12:18

almost anyone has probably heard "walk away renee", which has all the hallmarks of the left banke's sound. my favorites by them are "my friend today", "desiree" and "shadows breaking over my head". sheer genius, heard by too few.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from ScoobidooOct 11 2002 - 02:23

Well, for having a better view about the Left Banke's music, imagine the Beatles recording an album full of Eleanor Rigby songs. After the band splitted, the Montage album ( with Michael Brown) is also a masterpiece (less orchestral, but really charming).
Odissey and Oracle is a lost classic too. Does anyone knows the Millenium and Harper Bizarre? They've made great stuff too.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from aliOct 10 2002 - 17:04

hi rob s, i finally got around to downloading the c-clamp song, id've done it and replyed sooner but it was quite a big file. it's really nice, it reminds me of something, but im not sure what it is, maybe damien jurado fronting a collaboration of karate and the kingsbury manx ? i usually hate it when people bracket stuff like that but i've just done it so never mind, you've probably heard of all those people, but if not there all really worth checking out, as are the sublime built to spill who youve also probably heard of. scoobidoo's first three songs are a great choice, another left banke fan i see. the left banke were an obscure 60's new york band, somewhere between pet sounds era beach boys forever changes era love and the zombies ? i think they only made one proper album sadly, but theres a really good normal priced anthology on cd that i have called "theres gonna be a storm" which i think has all there songs on it . thats very good indeed.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from tharpeOct 09 2002 - 17:05

marvin gaye - "inner city blues" swervedriver - "duress" nina simone - "like the wind" mercury rev - "funny bird" keith green - "oh Lord your beautifull" catherine wheel - "thunderbird" neil young - "words(between the lines of age)" the beatles - "while my guitar gently weeps" u2 - "where the streets have no name" idaho - "hearts of palm" (i am not a song title person and have missplaced most of my liner notes and am growing weary from a long day of laboring)

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from ScoobidooOct 05 2002 - 07:57

Beach Boys "All I Wanna Do/Surf's up"
Left Bank "desiree"
MBV "Only Shallow"
Idaho "The sun is all There Is"
King Crimson "Starless"
The Chameleons "Nostalgia"
The Church "Hotel Womb"

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from mplsSep 26 2002 - 08:37

Pet Shop Boys' "Home and Dry" or "Always" for me.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from terminalbSep 25 2002 - 10:15

I definitely agree about Joe Pernice. I can't pick one song, but I know "chicken wire" and "bum leg" would be up there. Also "hearts of palm", especially live. You realize how strong Jeff's voice is when you hear songs like this live.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from iupripSep 25 2002 - 09:24

"Vicious" - Lou Reed, "Brown Eyes" RHP, "She's A Jar" - Wilco, "Hearts of Palms" Idaho, "Are You The One That I've Been Waiting For" Nick Cave, "Clogger" Sixteen Horsepower.

RE: favorite song of all time?? | from farmcafeSep 25 2002 - 08:37

you could probably include any song ever written by joe pernice. that guy's a genius.

if i had to choose one of his: "flaming wreck" from the world won't end

hi rob, they are super songs arnt they ! . maybe it's something to do with the different guitar tunings there all in ? interesting we have such similar tastes, though i've never heard of c-clamp ?, sounds good though, ill have to check them out. are there any other really good but less well known people you'd reccomend ? i cant really think of many other really good people who make that sort of music, maybe some of john martyns songs, or the left banke. nico's "chelsea girl" album is very sublime and has some lovely arrangements although some people seem to have problems with her voice, not me though.
