Pretty much...

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ECS.May 24 2002 - 19:45

Oooohhh. Shinney, are you trying to start a new line of xenophobic discussion?
HA HA HA HA HA

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ShinneyMay 24 2002 - 11:23

This is so gay.

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from mustafaMay 24 2002 - 08:42

ba-doom-boom....crash

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ajMay 24 2002 - 08:14

you can never be over-educated. that is seriouslyone of the sillieast things i have heard recently. yep, i'm an academic, but i'm also a music lover with a long past in the whole 'scene'. i'm not just an archair intellectual as some would say either. you still keep replying with sarcastic digs and whatnot--pretty fucking unproductive, but cheers to you for keeping the discussion going on your end.
enjoy your undereducated life...

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ECS.May 24 2002 - 01:05

Don't worry aj, I'm tired of talking about it too. Great discussion though! I don't get into msg boards too often, but your conversation was engaging.
later.

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ECS.May 24 2002 - 01:02

HA HA HA HA HA...
benefit HOW?!?

By gaining a better ability to discuss the ramifications of dissing bling blingers on a
I D A H O msg board?!

Have you considered that perhaps you're OVER-educated? Just a thought.

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from aj--the last responseMay 23 2002 - 10:27

one thing... your dictionary definition of xenophobia is not what i am referring to... cultural xenophibia is quite a bit different. and my entire prose here isn't political--its more social. i also did not imply that those joking about them are afraid of them. that is very far from the truth. you might benefit from reading some neomarxism and neoweberianism -- just a thought.

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ECS.May 23 2002 - 10:09

xen·o·phobe

A person unduly fearful of that which is foreign, especially of strangers or foreign peoples.

This is why I said I'm not afraid of rappers. Because you implied that everyone joking about them is afraid of them. Did you not realize that's what xenophobia means when you suggested all the jokers on this board were engaging in xenophobic behavior? 2) I said that you don't know what you're talking about because you said that you weren't a fan of hip hop music. Perhaps I misread that. 3) Please don't feel attacked by my messages - I'm only trying to make my point, and we happen to have a difference of opinion. 4) I am aware of your oppositional consciousness approach, but I simply don't see it as a fruitful approach. This is not the same as not understanding it. We are so far apart on this because we don't agree on the approach. Like Rob S said, a lighter mood is more appropriate for this topic. This is not a UN message board, it's an entertainment outlet. It's more a matter of time and place. Some people feel politics belong everywhere, and some people would rather there were no politics anywhere... 5) I am not a good citizen (or even a citizen, really), I do not recycle, and I am sure I would like a piece of the big bad corporate music pie. This is not sarcasm - just being honest. But really, I don't see the relevance to the current topic. Gotta go - I have to go play some non-political music tonight. And take a deep breath aj, it's gonna be alright!
:^)

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ajMay 23 2002 - 09:33

one more thing... how has anything that i have said sugegsted that i am "affraid of rappers" or that i don't know what i am talking about. i never suggested that you didn't like rap or know anything about it. nothing that i have stated suggests at all that i fear rap or don't know what i'm talking about. trust me, i do know what i am talking about. my views are just as "qualified" as yours, regardless of how you want to measure it. i own the records too. i know the history too. i could add some other things to this list but what's the point.

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ajMay 23 2002 - 09:28

actually, you really haven't paid attention to my posts. at leat your responses suugest so. you haven't really replied to practically anything that i have said or suggested.
nice to see that you have others that support your responses (i.e. "well done"). oh well... i tried.

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ajMay 23 2002 - 09:23

well... this isn't going anywhere. too unwilling to consider other perspectives. too bad. if you read my last post, which i'm assuming you did ecs, you would have noticed that i was framing an oppositional consciousness approach, but perhaps youaren't familiar with this (that's not a dig--most folks aren't). most folks get a little uptight or defensize when they feel that they are somehow being labeled a racits or xenophopic--even thought his kind of behavior is absolutely xenophobic. however, in all fairness i respect your views. unfortunetaly in my perception it seems as if you are unwilling to accept what i'm suggesting. if you feel more comfortable in dismissing what i'm saying than i'm really ok with that. the reference to rosa parks was not appropriate--she was actually a huge activist prior to the whole bus thing. that's great that you have met ice cube. i haven't. that's great that he was nice. unfortunately you continue to use blanketed discourse to describe hip hip (i.e. "lame"). as i at leat implicitly made clear or perhaps i didn't, i'm not suggesting that hip hop isn't "lame" (if we are using the term in the same general sense). BUT... as a macro oriented person I look at the forest most of the time and not the individual trees (but of course the trees are important). my responses to your post(s) have been about the bigger forest. ***question***--why do you seem to need to attack me in your replies? i'm not attacking you. just attempting to put some ideas on the table. if you wanna get down to it, i coul;d just as easily reply by telling you to fuck off as well but what would that accomplish? i'm sure you are a nice guy, ***nice*** to everyone and the birds and the trees. i'm sure you are a good world citizen and recycle and think that corporate music is a big bad wolf...

Well done.

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ECS.May 22 2002 - 21:20

Ok. So you admit that it's not racist. I don't think cultural xenophobia is an accurate description of this kind of joking either. Maybe you're afraid of gangsta rappers, but I'm not. At least I know what I'm talking about, because unlike you, I am a fan of rap, including some gangsta rap, in spite of its atrocious collective values. I met Ice Cube once, and he was super cool - he's a gangsta rapper. Some things are just easy to poke fun at, and some things, like people, set themselves up for it. As for whether or not to lighten up, I don't think you're moving Rosa Parks to the front of the bus when you imply that some enlightened, college-educated white boys shouldn't be dissing a lame cultural phenomenon like HIP HOP $$ BLING BLING because we're above it somehow. The truth is, it's lame. Niggaz know it, honkies know it, polka people know it, Nashville rednecks know it. It's only some highly irresponsible, and probably spoiled, young people who don't know it. Why should anyone hold their tongue about it? What do you think that will accomplish? Your silence might only increase the time it takes for those young'uns to outgrow that crap.

I was just trying to be funny. Obviously I'm not. I thought "This way outta compton" was pretty good. Geez. I own rap albums...lighten up buddy.

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ajMay 22 2002 - 15:04

as i explicitly stated which you conveniently ignoreed is the fact that racism is not the most appropriate description. for one thing racims is a very loaded term that mostly white males are very uncomfortable with. i explictly stated that cultural xenophobia is a better analytical description. and i don't disagree with what you are saying about other genres o fmusic that have other kinds of historical/cultural origins. Victims? i did't use that term. its very easy for most of us that frequent this board (i'm making a educated guess that the majority of us are white and middle-class) to dismiss these kinds of things as being too uptight. no, i will not lighten up. lightening up reproduces this kind of bullshit. i'm also not attacking anyone here for doing anything wrong. this thread was a series of silly little digs at hip-hop, a music that i'm not a fan of either. however, there are underlying structural and hegemonic meanings in these things and by letting them slide without discussing them or whatnot, we ARE guilty of reproducing certain kinds of inequalities, stigmas, and stereotypes. a more careful apporah to humor that isn't indirectly somewhow at the expense of other groups might be a better way to go for all the educated and thoughtful idaho fans out there as ECS would liek to categorize/typologize us as. also, i never mentioned that this genre was mutually exclusive of one community, only that it originated out of certain communities and was also completely coopted by the music/entertainment and fashion industry. think public enemy and even earlier more politically oriented rap. don't you think they are a little disenchanted with what it was transformed into? if idaho fans are 'educated' and thoughtful as ECS stated (which i believe in general as well), this type of discources and critique shouldn't be dismissed or taken as an attack. its just a set of alternative ideas. isn't the sharing of different ideas a characteristic of thoughtful, educated people that have some things in common (e.g. liking similar kinds of music)?

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from willMay 22 2002 - 14:25

lighten up, aj. The whole gangsta thug genre isn't limtited to the black community. Is might have developed there but it has spread. And personally I think it is the wrong direction. Money, bitches and guns. Oh ya, violence to, great way to live your life let alone raise your kids into it, which is happening at an alarming rate. Also what if people made fun of country music or polka? Are they being "racist" too. Why are some people fair game and then others victims?

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ajMay 22 2002 - 13:11

Actually, racism was not the most accurate way to put it but culturally xenophia was for sure. Some would argue rather convincingly with the exception of those that you referenced as being types of gangbanging thugs as creating a type of oppositional consciousness and culture in attempts to redefine dominant definitions and discourses about contemporary urban cultures which so happened to primarily emerge out of urban African American communities. With all due respect, what gives you the right and/or authority to make theese kinds of ideologically judgments about these kinds of things? The fact that you have internet access illustrates that you are in a relatively privileged position compared to most of the rest of the world. It may seem that on the surface that this was a collective approach at making fun of a genre of music that most of us dislike (including myself), but it has much deeper structural, historical, and cultural resonance than that.

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ECS.May 22 2002 - 11:50

racist?

Making fun of a genre that has grown old by becoming a caricature of itself, through relentless harping on stereotypes is not racist. It's the sellout rappers that should be ashamed of themselves for cooperating in establishing this public identity of the black man as a gang bangin hoodlum. And for many of those rappers, they should also be ashamed of themselves for BEING gang bangin hoodlums. Thoughtful, educated, introspective people like Idaho fans should not feel bad for laughing at the foolishness in the world around them once in a while. Tension was made to be broken.

sorry about the soapbox. I guess you hit a nerve aj.

RE: Hip Hop $ RnB Beats For YOU! | from ajMay 22 2002 - 11:44

this has gotten a little borderline racist/culturally xenophobic. idaho fans don't need to do this. obviously some guy/gal that does their type of music is trying to promote their stuff using certain culturally specific cues etc... to attract attention. it certainly attracted yours...
