RE: Mark Eitzel Nooz & Tour | from Seth HowardAug 03 2002 - 14:37
Grrr... I just checked my calendar and I have a show that night - in Anacortes.
Grrr... I just checked my calendar and I have a show that night - in Anacortes.
Cool.EMP is about as square as venues get around here, but I'll be there.
Hi kiddies, Mark's announced a handful of engagements before his tour with Low kicks off:
8/07 @ Lux Gallery, SF (BENEFIT FOR YOUTH SPEAKS AND 826 VALENCIA); 9/19 @ St. John's Pub, Portland; 9/21 EMP Songwriter's Series, Seattle.
I caught the Seattle show tonight. It was brilliant.
Some highlights:
- extended monologue about Jerry Lewis.
- beautifully loungey version of "Help Me Make It Through The Night"
Eitzel throws his wallet at Scott McCaughey from the stage, knocking his drink out of his hand. Later he knocked a stool over onto McCaughey's guitar.
Mark Eitzel was at the Paul Westerberg instore last Wed in SF. Paul asked the crowd if anyone was going to see Mark at his instore later than night. It's too bad that drunk asshole with the ponytail cut the Westerberg instore a little short with his heckling. Paul jumped off the stage, put his hands around the guys neck, and bitch slapped him.
That same guy went to the Eitzel instore and got bitched out.
WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP
Built to Spill and Heavenly covering each other...can't remeber the song names right now...split 7 inch on K
Robyn Hitchcock just issued a double-disc set of Bob Dylan covers called Robyn Sings; it's available through robynhitchcock.com. Mary Lou Lord also has quite a few covers (Magnetic Fields, Billy Bragg, Big Star) on her new live CD, Live City Sounds.
I'm not a huge Sarah McLachlan fan but she did a fascinating cover of "Unchained Melody" on a Nettwerk compilation called Brewed Awakening
I found in a used bin somewhere a few years ago.
And, of course:
The Sundays- Wild Horses;
Red House Painters- All Mixed Up;
Morrissey- Moon River;
Innocence Mission- Follow Me;
Slowdive- Some Velvet Morning;
Steven R. Smith- I Tried To Leave You;
Black Box Recorder- Seasons in the Sun;
Grant Lee Buffalo- In My Room;
Lori Carson- I Saw the Light
How 'bout Pavement's version of "Killing moon" by Echo and the bunnymen?
Not all of these are new, but here are some of my favorites:
Bedhead/Macha - Believe (Cher)
Luna - In The Flesh (Blondie)
Jawbox - Cornflake Girl (Tori Amos)
Dinosaur Jr. - Show Me The Way (Peter Frampton) - They also do a fine version of The Cure's Just Like Heaven.
Versus - Shangi-La (The Kinks)
Mark Kozelek/RHP - Follow You, Follow Me (Genesis)
His Name Is Alive - Blue - aka Blue Moon (Big Star)
Yo La Tengo - Little Honda (Beach Boys)
Cat Power - I Found A Reason (VU)
Swervedriver - Jesus (VU)
Low - Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me (The Smiths)
If you need to kill some time on your show, you could always play Built to Spill's version of Cortez The Killer.
looking forward to the cd; I'm a big Etzel / AMC fan.
anybody else know of recent notable and worthwhile covers? (I'm trying to collect a bunch for an upcoming radio show)
I'm thinking of stuff like:
Low & Dirty 3 - Down By the River (Neil Young)
Death Cab For Cutie - All Is Full of Love (Bjork)
Phantasmic - Eyes Without A Face (Billy Idol)
The Church - Cortez the Killer (Neil Young)
Stina Nordenstam - People Are Strange (Doors)
I just got the new record tonight and it's a hoot. He's playing here in Seattle on Sunday. I'll be there for sure.
i got "music for courage and confidence" about 2 weeks ago and it's fantastic - mark has truly revamped these old tired songs and made them his own, especially "snowbird" and "i only have eyes for you". i cringed when i first saw the track listing but the songs sound just like vintage AMC/eitzel.
Susan, Thanks for the info. I'll catch him in Philly. Haven't seen him since the Magnificent Seven tour.
