Ryan Adams poses an interesting problem. His affinity for early Springsteen and soothing melodies pique my interest but his mediocre lyrics and lack of innovation result in nice, but forgettable (though not terrible) songs. Is anyone working this late 70's pop-rock-country thing well these days? Seriously, this is not a rhetorical question, point me in the direction of some good stuff. My Buckner CD's are putting me to sleep.
*scratching head and ruminating*
I'm intrigued. Would you suggest he do it before he went, or would he go and then do it? hmmmmmmmm....
Yeah, I'd originally planned on covering the panels, but ultimately decided I'd rather sleep than watch a bunch of smarmy veteran rock critics jack each other off.
The dueling Marks were at Big Star? Did they box? (That's what happens when you have one eye on the stage and the other on your notebook all damn night-- you miss all the drama in the crowd.) Didn't see Mike Mills, although I met someone who encountered him at the post-Fastbacks party and she said he looked pretty frightful. It's probably a good thing I didn't see Ryan Adams-- I'd have had to tell him what I think he can do and where I think he can go...
Try Split Enz "True Colors".......Oooopps, I just dated myself!
i couldn't wait for any of you to answer so i went to artist direct and discovered, yes, it is the same brother. so if you'll excuse me i'll be on amazon buying everything i have missed since that album came out.
finn, finn, is this one of the men on the 1995 album called Finn Brothers, i know that they joined forces for that one album and then went thier own way but i lost the case and have only the cd. So if this is the same finn i would love it if you could let me know. Anyone else love that album? One of my all time favorites.
I was too tired to make it to the other shows I planned to hit (Lily's, Versus, panel discussion). I heard Eitzel was at a bunch of the shows. My friend talked to Mark Kozelek at Big Star but he wasn't in the VIP section like Mike Mills and Ryan Adams.
Neil Finn was great. Getting to see him play with his all-star band (Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Germano, Sebastian Steinberg, Shon Sullivan, Scott McPherson) was amazing. The new songs sound even better live.
tough life.
Oh my God-- that's you?! What's up? Wow-- I actually had a really good time at Slim's as it was practically the only venue at which I didn't get into heaps of trouble all week. But then again PTL was the only show I ended up covering there. What other NP shows did you see? How was Neil? Have you heard the new albums? I'm seeing him at SXSW this week-- he's doing an instore matinee set Friday and the Nettwerk showcase (w/ Departure Lounge and the Actual Tigers, with whom Idaho played recently) Saturday. Gotta go pack...grrr....
It was a guess. We watched your stuff while you went outside. Slim's is one of the worst venues in the city. But that didn't stop me from going to see Neil Finn there last night.
Eeh, I thought it was kinda funny, but I was liquored up...I guess it looks less funny in a sober state...eeh, never take me seriously, k?
wow, that's just great, JK, make the woman feel unsafe now... joking about the smell of her hair?
as a man myself, it bothers me to hear/see/read things like this.. but i don't expect you or anyone else to understand until someone you love has been violated. you should be ashamed... it's not something to take lightly or to "laugh" at...
sorry, dude, just my 2 1/8 cents worth...
Oops, my roomie got into a car accident when i typed that, and i was on messenger, somehow it got into this thread. Hilarious when read out of context though. My bad. Oh yeah, your hair smells good, Susan.....hahaha JK!!! Havent been out of the Chicago area for awhile, not sure who you hob nob with or whatever, just know youre a music journalist from the board. Honestly, dont even know who you write for either.
BTW, how'd you know it was me at PTL? I snuck a peek at the guestlist before I went in and there were tons of reporters there.
That was sarcasm. I was kidding. You readers are so clueless sometimes. My evil twin will be contacting you shortly. I suggest you hide.
Like Im serious, you journalists are so uptight at times....
Like I'm gonna tell you!
Cool, I dig the eviler of the twins the most....hey...ummm... whats her address?
No. That was my evil twin.
Was that you upstairs reviewing the Pedro the Lion show?
I'm with Susan. I'm pretty sure I ran into her when I used to live in San Francisco.
Five bucks says Luna Munnii's really a guy. Who's in?
Hey !! I want to add "graphics" to my
messages !!??!!
How'd you do that?
hey, keep your hands off my sister !?!
Where I come from broadband isn't known.
Hey, Im Switzerland in THIS war...
Susan, I just subscribed to BTO because of all the buzz surrounding your Eitzel piece. If it's as good as the hype, I'll send you two dollars. Congratulations.
And if you thought I'd forgotten about the damn dollar you've got another think coming. I'm leaving for Noise Pop in SF on Tuesday and need all the cab fare I can scrounge up so I won't have to drive around all farked up. So kick it down! All major credit cards accepted. No checks, please.
And, thusly, World War III began...
Great! Now we're talking about QUEEN ?!! What next Enrique Iglesias ? Yes, Chris thank you so much!! The inscription was so kind.
I'l start it when I get back from my sojourn.JK definately owes Susan the dollar though.Chris gets a pass because he is PUBLISHED.
Now I'm off to inventory my Barbara
Striesand cassettes...
Bachman Turner Overdrive, my ass. One of you queens had better fork over a buck or this is going to get ugly.
John B. Sorry about the BTO remark. I was just takin' care of business. Mark Farner is God, though. I suddenly feel very old and very, very tired. P.S. Did you get the books?
This should have posted before JK....
(WRONG ANSWER BUZZER SOUND)
Chris, I think YOU owe Susan a dollar for that little outburst.
I'd have to to be high on paint thinner to refference bachman turner overdrive. Speaking of which, have you heard the new Grand Funk Railroad album ??........
BTO is the BIG TAKEOVER, the Jack Rabid run indie-music bible. If Jack and Co. don't write about it, you don't need to listen to it.
As for my bitch, I mean Jeff, he's been slaving away in the studio for the past week. He's going through and cleaning up songs for the upcoming
"unreleased" IDAHO record (due out Sept.) The volume of material and the quality is already outstanding.
It is going to make some people VERY happy.
It will definitely be one of the coolest IDAHO records ever. Paint thinner not included.
I'll try not to spend it all in one place. BT O= www.bigtakeover.com.
Susan, heres yer dern dolla.
hey john, wheres jeff been? havent seen him post for awhile...
Bachman Turner Overdrive
I'll tell you...for a buck
Whats BTO???
Hey, thanks! How'd you find out about it?
I peed myself as well. By the way Susan, nice piece on Eitzel in the BTO.
*pissing pants laughing*
Ya I knew this chick once, she was a broad in a band, it was a broad-band.
with broadband dsl you are connected all the time, this is why it's a must to have a firewall protection program to keep hackers away. a virus scan is not enough. But with downloads it's amazingly quick and the quality of how it views on your computer relates to exactly that, your computer. If you have an okay computer thats a few years old and a not so hot video card, your computer may not run it so smoothly, making it look choppy because the processor cant keep up with the size of the videos. So even if you get broad band, your computer may make the videos look so-so. I had that problem with my old laptop, we're talking 96 ibm thinkpad 100mhz. SSSSSlllllloooooooowwwwwww! Everything looked bad. But now i have a great piece of equipment and it's like watching tv. So thats just one thing to think about to you tony and anyone else who has thought about broadband. Make sure your PC is up to date and you must must must have a firewall program. i use Blackice Defender from a company called Network Ice. It's very simple to use but impossible to penetrate. Have fun!
Here in the UK it's a bit hard to get hold of at the moment, I'm down in Hastings on the south coast and they've only just started talkng about making it available. Are you connected the whole time if you have broadband or do you turn it off and on like with a normal modem??? Also, what about films can you see them alright? I tried to download the film from here (idahomusic) but it was too slow.
I'm moving to Denmark soon so I'm hoping it's a bit easier to get over there.
See you,
Tony
you can borrow some as long as you make some nice broadband...
can i borrow some money?
I agree with Adam in nyc. I'll never go back to 56k. Mine costs 48.00 a month. WORTH IT!
absolutely, I've had broadband in NYC for well over 2 years and it was available even before that, my income just wasn't accommodating. But my family and friends across the nation have had it as well for a few years. On average it costs about $45.00/month. I love it and will have nothing else from now on.
Hi everyone, I was in an internet cafe in London yesterday and they had a connection called 'T1' and it was very, very quick indeed. I thought the quickest was ADSL but this is apparantly quicker. Is broadband common in the US now or are most of you connected via a normal modem??
yours, Tony
