Any feedback?

Just got this from Rob's publicist: "ROB DICKINSON releases Fresh Wine For The Horses on Sanctuary Records on September 13th. You may remember Rob from the UK band the Catherine Wheel, who were popular 'round the mid-'90s. Rob's since been living in LA designing sports cars for Porsche. Somehow, he found the time to make this brilliant solo debut. And for more about Rob, go to http://www.robdickinson.com."
ROB DICKINSON'S ALBUM DROPS ON 9/13/05 - CAN'T WAIT!!!! Check out some of his new songs too: www.myspace.com/robdickinson
don't catherine wheels like, run out of fizz or something?
I don't approve of animals.
Fuck you, you asslicking son of a bitch. We work hard here to maintain a sordid little orgy of lust and hatred. With a little spoonful of love pixie dust sprinkled in.
Only when we had a bad whisky and the water's rising, mind.
Now, go find some ugly folks to slobber over while we get down to some nice, mean barnyard animal troublin.
just found out about this message
board and it's the funniest I've ever visited.
I really enjoy the way people insult each other.
this said I'm also very happy to hear people mentioning Catherine Wheel, a very underrated band I think.
I saw them opening for the Smashing Pumpkins in 1991 in a club here in Lausanne, and they kicked their druggies arses. I have to agree with everyone
who says Ferment and Chrome are their best albums.
Pain is an amazing song.
Especially that little noise when he re-plugs his guitar.
awesome.
Don't forget about me!
for anyone who cares - rob sings on a track on the new Jimmy Chamberlain Complex cd.. just released a few months ago..
the song is called LIFE BEGINS AGAIN..
.. good sounds indeed.
Rob's website is up and running.

Hi Folks. I am the DJ that has been playing tracks from Rob's record in NYC. I just played another track today. Go to my page then click on the "Listen to most recent show here" link to here the show from 7.23.05
http://www.eastvillageradio.com/displayshow.php?showname=Fast%20Forward%20Reverse
I have been in contact with Brian Futter, actually he emailed me, and said that he would send me a 50Ft Monster CD to play. YAY!
I believe we have added a "Posdcast" link for shows now. Recent addition to the schedule at EVR...not sure if it is available through iTunes yet.
Very nice. Thanks! :-)

to hear on for rob's new songs "handsome" go to:
www.eastvillageradio.com/displayshow.php?showname=Fast%20Forward%Reverse
it's the ninth song and it's great
Steve, point understood. On Happy Days his voice does tend to get raspy and almost crack at times. Which does add some edge and "nonproduction" sense, but if your just going by "My name is love" you'll have to hear the rest.
Matt UK- If you have the ability to email an mp3 to my address above, it would be very much appreciated. thanks!
Doesn't Rob's voice sound, TOO silky? Live it has an edge - too many fags ect. On CD they don't want anything....raw. I think that on Ferment and Chrome they hid his voice in the mix a little. Wishville and now the solo album have him higher in the mix but overpolished. I don't want vocorder perfect; a little more Lennon would make the music just about perfect...
Send it to me, I'll find a good reliable source to host it from. :-)

Not really sure how I can upload an mp3 to you guys...any thoughts?
Why you so mean and stupid?
Me sooooo Horny!!!!

So I was reading "Excellence" magazine last month about Porsche's and sure enough, there was an article about a man who grew up loving Porsches and had restored an older Porsche. Sure enough, it was Rob Dickinson from Catherine Wheel. This was the last place I expected to see an article about him, but it was great nonetheless. I went to Excellence to find a link so you could read it, but it appears they have already updated the website with this month's edition.
If you're not a member of the Yahoo group discussion for Rob Dickinson. Feel free to join.
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/All_of_That/
Steve please explain by "they" and why you think it's overproduced. I like the "overproduction" sense , in that there are nice thought over/layered harmonies. Just intersested in your thoughts.
Why are they still overproducing Robs voice?
I can respect that. Can't say I'm not disappointed though! ;-) An mp3 would be great if you feel ok doing that.
Looks like your computer needs some maintenance, as the link works for everyone else.
check out www.cwlivearchive.net/rd_interview_030605.mp3
that link doesn't work
Matt UK- One MP3 would be fantastic for now. I just need something while we're waiting for the album. I can tell by your name that you are a reasonable and handsome man, so anything that you can do to help a brother out would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Aside from the fact that I have no means of getting one to you guys, my instructions are for 'personal enjoyment'. I would like to spread it a bit because it is quite fantastic, but it would get me into big trouble probably! Might try and offer out one mp3 or something, not sure how. Can't really risk anymore though as I have been trusted with this one. Sorry guys not trying to piss you off!
I'll add a "P" to that!!
So no chance of getting a copy? P p p please? :-)
The missing track from Gary's listing is Bathe Away. Not the strongest track on the album by any means but still damn good! To be honest Gary has given you guys all the info but any more question, happy to answer if I can. Cheers for the radio link, forwarded it onto a friend of mine who's real close with Rob. She hadn't heard anything of it!Well done finding that!
thanks for the radio show link
i've always loved Catherine Wheel's Talk Talk-ish stuff the most (Saccharine from Like Cat's and Dogs being a current favourite)
there are some really interesting anecdotes on Talk Talk and Tim Friese-Greene in there. Someone needs to do a comprehensive documentary on Talk Talk focussing especially on their later years and the recording of Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. Those albums really are life changing and the stories behind them are fascinating.
Oh by the way anyone have a copy of yhe web broadcast studio M live did of cw in nyc in 2000? I had it then fry zap boom & its gone...damn! Anyone help?
the night is good, my name is love is great!!! Listen, why does everone kill wishville, so its not chrome, but its got some good stuff. Cmon sanctuary get off your ass and put this thing out!!
well said my friend, now go wipe
POOP POOP POOP POOP
I have listened to audio of that radio show about 10 times and I have to say that I think "The Night" is one hauntingly beautiful song. That song just sticks to me. "My Name is Love" is a pretty good song but it sounds a little too Wishville-y to me. Good but not great. Don't get me wrong, good is still ,well, good. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.
11 tracks, about an hr long.
-mutineer
-oceans
-my name is love
-the storm
-the night
-"sorry folks, forgot this track"
-towering and flowering
-intelligent people
-bad beauty
-handsome
-don't change
You are the first I've heard of that has it. I've been able to get promos for the past three albums from CW, but this one is proving to be a tough one to get ahold of. Consider youself blessed. :-)
So yeah, how many tracks? Can you tell we are foaming at the mouth for more info?
Matt UK or Gary- Since I might be waiting a while, can you give me a little more insight to the album? number of tracks, song titles, length of the album. I'm dying over here. thanks
Just looked on Sanctuary site and now no mention of Rob's album..Does anyone have anymore info??
The copy I've got was off a promo. Kind of under strict instruction from where I got it. The man himself has asked not to leak this. It is truly fantastic. I've had this for months now. I'm really one of very few lucky people to get hold of this already. Has nobody else got a copy?
Yeah, I'd love a copy as well if anybody has a promo. Not like I am not going to buy a few when the album comes out. :-)
sorry, i mean sept 13th. i was trying to move it up 10 days.
I found this on Sanctuary's website. Looks like our boys album is dropping on Sept 3rd.
Coming Soon!
KISS – “Rock The Nation Live !”, Bizarre (of D-12) – “Hannicap Circus” – June 28th, Earth, Wind & Fire – “Illumination” – August 2nd, Ray J – “Raydiation” – August 23rd, Bag – first release on Simmons Records – August 30th, A Dozen Furies – Winners of the ‘Battle For Ozzfest’– August 30th, Moistboyz – “Moistboyz” August 30th, Ric Ocasek – “Nexterday” – September 13th, Rob Dickinson – “Fresh Wine For The Horses” – September 13th, The Allman Brothers – “Live From American University 12/13/70”
P.S. Thanks matt for posting that link, even though it's made the wait for the album's release seem a lot longer. "My Name is Love" is out of this world.
really looking forward to this album.
Matt, is there anyway that i could get me grubby little hands on a copy of the album???
Just came across your website and agree with Gary.
I'm in the U.K and I've had a copy of this album since December. It's truly awesome. Flows as well as Adam & Eve 'Oceans' and 'Bathe Away' offering more Catherine Wheel style guitar driven moments and songs like 'The Night', 'Bad Beauty' representing a melancholic, acoustic side of the album.
Could be the album to set Rob up for the well deserved mainstream recognition on both sides of the Atlantic.
I am so f***ing happy right now
check out www.cwlivearchive.net/rd_interview_030605.mp3
for a 2 hr interview w/ rob and features some new tunes. "mutineer" (warren zevon song)is at the 23 minute mark. "my name is love" at the 1hr 4min mark and "the night" at the 1hr and 29min mark. brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!!! the new album is called "fresh wine for the horses" and will be out at the end of the summer.
is there an mp3 clip of the song available?
Just heard "My Name Is Love" on KCRW and LOVE IT. I hear rumours that the album is coming out on Sanctuary at the end of the summer and can't wait!!!
Heard this on kcrw.com earlier and it has been in my head for hours now. I must acquire this song, somehow!!!
I happened to be in the right place at the right time. A friends, friend had the CD because he was auditioning for the band out here in LA. My friend knowing I'm a huge CW fan sat me down and we gave it a whirl....twice. So I wish I had tighter connections, but I don't. Just got lucky and can't wait until the albums release so I may hear it again. All I can do is share my memories.
Gary, who the heck do you know in order to hear the album and how do I get in tight w/this person?!
SON OF A .....
Possibly this summer I hear. I'm not sure if Rob has a record deal yet, or a backing band etc...
I think whoever gets behind him will not be disapointed. The album starts out kinda weird (sounds of the ocean, seagulls horses and a hot rod type vehicle doors closing - kinda hard to explain) then the album takes you on a journey. The second listen was even better.
for the love of god gary!!! you've actually heard the new album? any word on when the rest of us poor wankers can hear the album?
A friend of a friend let me hear the solo album, though I unfortunatly could not get a copy of it. This is whatcha have to look forward to. If you like Adam & Eve prepared to be blown away. We listened to it from beginning to end and the album flows better than any CW album. Nice rhythms and rich in harmonies, almost eaglesque at times. "My name is love" you'll have it in your head for days. "The Storm" more CW/guitar driven. There are a couple parts of cover tunes segwaying songs together.(F.Sinatra,W.Zevon) tasefully done. The album is fantastic, kinda mellow at times but that's all good in the name of music. Enjoy!!
there's a time and place for all CW music. Ferment with its purity and rawness. Chrome with its dark "rip your head off" elogance. Happy Days, while it meanders a bit has big time CW wheel classics, "Heal" & "Shocking". Adam & Eve with sweeping landscapes and crushing dynamics. Wishville is a victim of the bands success. We were so used to earth-shifting tunes that when the band releases a bunch 4minute pop songs we're too spoiled to enjoy it. I for one can't wait to hear rob's solo album. Anything that is remotely Catherine Wheel as got to better than most.
It's dificult to choose a best album between Ferment, Chrome and Adam&Eve. They are all great.
Wishville is not as bad as some of you say, but it is their worst album.
Happy days is in the middle.
no disrespekt to idaho but i never thought that living in NY i'd get my most up-to-date CW info from "idaho music" board. i don't get how anyone who digs CW can dislike any of their albums - they are all different, and each has a different place in my headpiece. the b-sides collections i have are probably my favorite - colleidoscopic and paranoia are beyond fresh. i don't know about solo projects, let's see what happens, but i'm just hoping to see CW live again sometime soon.
I know everyone is entitled to their opinion and I can't believe A Catherine Wheel fan who doesn't like Happy Days. God Inside My Head is a great kick-off song and Heal is one of their best. Definitely my favorite live song. "Kill My Soul" is excellent too.
But then, I like "Judy Staring at the Sun", too, and I bet evryone hates it..
As much as I dislike "Best Of" compilations, I wish that instead of putting out "wishville", they had released a best of with a couple new tracks. Some product to introduce CW to a new audience. Actually, I wish I owned a radio station and played the regularly.
P.S. I must give "Wishville" another chance, since a few of you are passionate about it. maybe I'll find something I like this time.
any guess as to when the website will be up and running? any info on the new album?
NP: CW - Ferment. My fave CW record. A&E is a close second. I hated Wishville on first listen. But I got used to it. It _is_ my least favorite of theirs....
watch out for http:www.robdickinson.com soon.
Also get your asses over to TEXTURE to gossips with over 600 other people about the wonder that IS/WAS CW!
http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/texture
The first time I heard Adam and Eve I was very disappointed with it. But the more I listened to it the more I began to love. Brian, give it some time.
fermenting for i wanna touch you
chrome for a half life that doesn't quite glitter
happy days to eat my dust you insensitive fuck you
adam and eve just like cats and dogs because you must heal to be delicious
wishville for CW to come back to town for i only saw them live once :(
i actually just got Adam & Eve last week to complete my Catherine Wheel catalog and have to say i think it's the weakest album they made.
^^^^^
what on
"Adam and Eve" era?
Adam and Eve was an album in context. I heard three songs, over a month ago, that were played once on the radio, and were couched between an interview, other band's songs, a few beers and a mild delusion. I can't even speak to that. I do remember the contrast between his cover of the Mutineer and the original was like what he did to "Wish You Were Here." It was subtlely keyed to make it more rich and resonant-- still clearly a ballad, but more rich and resonant. I don't have anything clear on anything else, except please don't use Adam and Eve era in the same sentence until G. Dubyah is out of office because the last time Adam and Eve had an era, I think we were in the dark ages.
Happy Days was an excellent CD showcasing the wall of sound CW style that I loved. I'd say Chrome was second in ranking.
would you say it sounded more like the "adam & eve" era?
He was on FM94/9, Coup d'eTat awhile ago and played some songs off of his new album. Here's the web site, http://www.fm949sd.com/station/coup.cfm You'll see a playlist and a picture.
To me the songs sounded like--emphasis on voice-honest, direct-open a vein and sing type stuff.
Wishville was a finely tuned quirk.
Quirks are fun. I have more issues with the cover art, because it reminds me of Freud and standing still. But that's just me.
Hi Brant,
You know that album "Wishville" by Catherine Wheel? It really sucks.
Sincerely,
c
I don't consider it the greatest album ever made, but I do think Adam & Eve is one heck of a fantastic album.
i'm tired of 30 year old indie-virgins getting their panties in a knot over others' musical opinions.
fuck off...
I am surprised at how there is no info on the web regarding RD's solo album. Why is it being kept so tightly under wraps? Sanctuary can't even offer any info.
On a seperate matter, to me Adam & Eve is the greatest album ever made.
I know that seems like an over-the-top statement but it's true.
Chrome is also amazing. Wishville is ok at best.
I'm tired of people putting down wishville.
fuck off...
Robs new album will be out late summer most likely.
Hmmm, not all that impressed with the 50ft monster stuff... Here's hoping that the new RD stuff will be closer to the mark!
There is news out about Bruce Dickinson's new solo effort, but things are still pretty quiet on Rob's front.
i hope rob's solo album turns out to be decent,i loved catherine wheel, one of the best uk bands of the 90's.damn shame they ran out of steam.chrome and happy days are 2 cracking albums.
not Rob..but heres what Neil and Brian from CW are up to...
http://www.50ftmonster.com
"fresh wine for the horses"
there you have it...............
I found a mixer's web site last week (can't remember where it is) but the guy had just finished mixing or recording or mastering (or something!) for Rob's new album.
The Sanctuary web site still doesn't have any info, but I can't wait.
My two cents: Loved Happy Days (Eat my Dust, Kill My Soul, Heal, Fizzy Love, God Inside My Head...great tracks), also loved Adam & Eve. Broken Nose is up there with Eat my Dust for favorite CW track.
sk
I do have the likes of Alice in Chains in my record collection, so maybe I appreciate the grungier side of the band, but I also have Floyd, a taste which is catered for by Eat My Dust... Kill My Soul is one of the best songs they've ever written.
Ferment has always slightly disappointed me overall. Shoegazing is a term that is often used, but this is perhaps unfair. Overuse of distortion means that you lose a lot of the melodies, however, and only Black Metallic really serves as a standout track.
Chrome struck a much better balance, keeping some of the distortion to good effect, but not drowning the songs in it. Pain is a great example of this. There were, however, some bassier rock songs on the album. Take Kill Rythm and Chrome and tell me that you can't see the link to the Happy Days era.
Adam and Eve has me drawing comparisons to the Smashing Pumpkins, with their move from the eclectic Mellon Collie to the far quieter Adore. While I enjoy the respective efforts from both artists, neither of them really live up to what came before in my eyes. Adam and Eve had some very strong moments, such as Broken Nose and For Dreaming, but songs such as Futureboy never really stroked my goat.
Wishville suffered from being a short album full of four-minute-something songs. All of the songs are at the very least good, and it is even pleasing as an overall effort, but it seemed to lack the sonic diversity of Chrome and Happy Days, without sharing Adam and Eve's flowing cohesion.
Personally, all of CW's records
are great records, and I've
always applauded them for
breaking trail and carving out a
unique sound. In terms of time
and place, they'd certainly
begun in that "Brit Pop" Stones
Roses kind of way, but they grew
into a great rock band. Adam&
Eve might be their "Dark Side"
or their "Sgt. Pepper" It's
strong from start to finish. I
think it's short sighted to
write Happy Days off, as a "cash
in on the heavy sound, trend".
If the key element of CW's sound
is that feeling of a simmering
slow boil, then HDs blows the
f@#king lid off. Wouldn't you be
curious to push it that much
further? As far as Wishville is
concerned - It's a great record
that didn't get the proper
promotion from their label.
I listen to Happy Days once in a blue moon. I also don't think it's awful, but it's by far my least favorite of theirs.
I didn't say I didn't LIKE Happy Days. I do like it. I just think it's their weakest album.
Honestly, I think Wishville was better than Happy Days by far. Adam & Eve was incredible. But then, so were Chrome and Ferment. Hard to pick a favourite. I find Chrome and Ferment very similar in style, and good for all the same reasons. Adam and Eve was different, and good for different reasons. Same goes for Wishville. Happy Days, to me, was the most generic album they've done.
But I say again - I still like it.
Happy Days was nothing but heavy, heavy, heavy in your face. It was too relentless. They had a delicate quiet/loud balance on the first two albums and again later, but Happy Days was basically a grunge album. It was CW trying to be something they weren't in order to cash in on what was popular at the time. There was little of their trademark subtlety or beauty on Happy Days.
You should go to The Big Takeover's website and you'll find a sample interview with CW from the Adam and Eve era where Happy Days is discussed.
How can you not like Happy Days? That and Chrome were their best albums! Rumours are that the solo effort will be along the lines of Adam and Eve, but who knows if it will even see the light of day - it's been a long five years of waiting with very little in the way of news...
I absolutely think that Wishville DOESN'T suck. I loved Wishville. If anything, I think Happy Days was the weakest of their albums, but I still like it. Better than most albums by most other bands by far.
Wishville was different than all of the previous albums, by a long shot. I'll grant that. And maybe that's why so many of the fans panned it. It wasn't full of the same kind of stuff that made people love CW in the first place. It was good for different reasons. Seems a lot of people just didn't get that.
I, for one, would be quite disappointed if it had been too much like the previous albums. I love the variety. I love to see the progression. And I loved the album itself, right from start to finish. There was a raw, uncalculated, emotional quality to it that I hadn't seen brought to the forefront before.
Rob Dickinson's solo album is done and slated for release sometime this summer I think. He's currently in LA auditioning people to tour with him for the release. One of my good friends got a chance to audition (Backup vocals, guitars, piano) and said that the sound is very present day - meshing together the sounds we know Rob does so well with harder twist on the 'Coldplay sound'.
Actually, "Wishville" IS that bad. I tried and tried and tried to get something, ANYTHING out of that album, but there's nothing there. And CW had already released one mediocre album anyway - "Happy Days". If CW had released another album after "Wishville", I definitely would have given it a listen. But they didn't, probably because they knew how bad "Wishville" sucked, and they knew they were washed up.
And it's absolutely not true that EVERY artist/band releases a mediocre album. Many do, yes, but not ALL. That's an unfair generalization.
Ok, "Whishville" was not as bad as everyone made it out to be. And since when was it a crime to release one mediocre album. Every artist does, it doesn't mean that you should drop them like a bad habit. Had everyone been a bit more supportive and stuck with them perhaps they would have released another album that kicked ass.
Did anybody read the review of the
Jimmy Chamberlin Complex in Rolling Stone Mag? They called Rob and his voice Goth.
Now that's some funny shit.
heh, heh, he said GOTH.......
Personally, I've always loved CW's music. I remember when Black Metallic came out on 120 minutes. I've been hooked since then.
And ROb, if that really was you...release something!! It's been way too long. Your voice rocks, your style rocks, and it would be great to hear from you again.
The Muse has filled the void left by you.
I saw Rob Dickinson was slated to
play SXSW.
Now I guess he's not?!
Love is Real is the better of the two songs on that album which are graced by my vocal presence.
P.S. Ba-ba-ba-ba-balloon!
I think chrome was the best album ever released. I love ferment and adam and eve also, actually I love everything they've ever put out. Anyway check out the song life begins again if you haven't already. Rob Dickinson sings on this song for jimmy chamberlin's solo album. www.jimmychamberlin.com
I think Ferment is much more consistent. Chrome is great, but it kind of jumps around and doesn't sound too cohesive to me.
I think Chrome is a better release all around, although I still remember the first time I heard Black Metallic (Ferment) and wished it would never end...I also think that Eat My Dust... is an amazing lyric.
I have heard that Rob Dickinson is finished with his solo album and that it will be released this year on Sanctuary Records. Yay!
never heard Ferment. do you think it's better than Chrome? if so/not, why?
i loved the catherine wheel. i'm still partial to Ferment. i used to record all the live performances on 120 minutes in the early-mid 90's and they were on there and Black Metallic had grown to double it's length live and became an epic song almost and Mtv actually showed this amazing live version of it. i have tons of vhs tapes i need to convert to dvd.
Yeah. They did make some great records though... Chrome in particular. I loved Adam & Eve as well. But after Wishville, I just lost interest completely. True and total garbage. That record captured perfectly the sound of a band completely run out of steam. Maybe the most perfect example ever.
that band had so much promise...
then rob busted out his silver shirt and it was over.
Nope, but if it's going to SUCK as mightily as "Wishville" did, I'm not interested.
Anyone know ANYTHING about Rob Dickinson's rumored solo project?
