some fun pics. circa 96. Congrats. on the show the bordens will be watching
and listening!
Another job well done, Jeff. Really different from the first episode. It's really cool to hear you do stuff outside of the IDAHO style.
I'm actually kinda getting sucked into the story, too. Ugh... ; )
I hear in next week's episode, we're going to find out that it was really Jeff who impregnated the teenage daughter and not the jock boyfriend.......or will it be the mother he impregnated
I took a film scoring class last semester, and the teacher was the composer on Star Trek Deep Space Nine, and the next generation. He would constantly tell us the work was done insanely fast. He'd work with huge orchestras (he had a partener who worked as the orchestrator and did the conducting) and these union players just sight-read everything, 1st take, no fooling around. Do you hire other players or do you do it all yourself?
From what I know, it's really hard work. I praise you for giving it a shot. Most TV work I know is horrible, Mike Post does a lot of TV work (he did x-files, NYPD blue for a while) and his stuff is SOOO bad. Your worst cues will be better than a lot of the "best" ones on tv, I'm sure.
ill check into the legality of posted my cues at the site.....ABC owns most of them....there are some really nice ones ...the1st episode was jam packed with music....no choice of mine...they used a lot of stuff from my reel..i.e. "how make the cruelest month" , something i wrote for my friend kip's show for FOX that didnt air, the idaho song, and a couple of new idaho song ideas......i just finished the 2nd episode which i really only had a few days to score....i had to work really fast so the quality takes a bit of a hit on lots of the cues....its exhausting work cause i dont work with samples for the most part.....if it gets picked up for more episodes ill seriously have to consider if i have the energy to take it on......all of this is really doing wonders for my internal music making machine ....if that makes sence...when i finally get to finishing the idaho CD...it will be a lot better because of this crazy work
can anyone tell me what music was used, i.e. songs? or was it all instrumental - I missed it on sunday.
Yeah I have to say the show is really kinda cliche. All the characters seem to fit very nicely into their respective roles (1 oucast, 1 nerd, 1 popular kid, 1 dad with midlife crisis, 1 mother businesswomen) sort of an American Beauty thing going on.
BUT your music adds 100% to the show though Jeff. All the cues were really nice, excellent blend of voice/piano/electronics. It was all really non-invasive, and your themes fit really well with the feel of the program. I sometimes felt there might have been too many cues, but I don't know if that was your choice or the music supervisor or whatever.
All in all, I think you've done a really great job Jeff, congrats.
i wish i could see it too. but i guess i don't have the right channels... i feel left out. but congrats to you jeff. it sounds great.
canuck, you expressed my feelings on it too.
Jeff,
Congrats on the gig. It was surreal to hear your music in the background of this big budget mainstream network TV drama/soap, and the music was very well done. I hope they're paying you very very well and that the TV & ad work will lead to bigger and better things (so you will be able to keep releasing brilliant uncompromising music). More people being exposed to your art would certainly not be a bad thing (overexposure maybe, but you’re a long way from that).
I gotta be honest though and say I found the show itself pretty weak. Not being a yuppie soccer mom, its appeal was largely lost on me. Certain aspects of it (the camerawork, the characters, the faux angst) actually annoyed me, but I won’t belabor you with my idiosyncratic quibbles. I'm afraid the novelty of hearing your wonderful music won’t be enough to compel me to choose it over the Simpsons or Malcolm in the Middle or whatever else it’s up against that particular night (or to turn on the TV in the first place – I find myself watching a lot less these days).
Lord knows we all have to pay the bills somehow . I'm just hoping we won’t have to click on the idiot box each time we get an itch to hear some of your new music. :)
I'll buy the soundtrack (if there ever is one) but I'd rather buy a new Idaho record.
I was flipping aroung last night and caught this too. The music was by far the best part of the show.
Speaking of posters, did anyone see the Shins posters in the girls' locker room scene?
For those of you outside of the US, and who 'bit torrent', the first episode is available at http://www.suprnova.org/.
The score was the best part of the show. The piece in the opening sequence was brilliant.
Mad props.
Ross
"I hope Jeff Martin doesn't abandon Idaho and fade into T.V. composer obscurity like Danny Elfman did, j/k"
...or Mark Mothersbaugh e.g. Beakman's World and Rugrats..not that I have ever seen either of those shows. :)
Heh, it was a little wierd hearing "On The Shore" the instrumental version in the background during parts of the show, but all in all not a bad show. I thought it had kind of a Party of five feel to it.
I hope Jeff Martin doesn't abandon Idaho and fade into T.V. composer obscurity like Danny Elfman did, j/k. Can someone post a link to the appropriate department to write a letter or email to? I want to give them kudos for the cool music that played during some of the more poignant scenes in the show (meaning the idahomusic of course).
;-)
Does anyone know if/when this is to repeat? Yesterday morning my residence was briefly without power and I forgot to reset the VCR. :(
The only thing I got to see were those damn commercial-laden closing credits...
BTW Jeff, whatever happened to that 7 minute Doc Martin commericial you were working on?
the unsteady camera thing is so trndy now...loved the music jeff...lots of cool reverse effects and percussion and vocal stuff
Nothing really to add here that hasn't been said. I laughed when the older son was listening to Hearts Of Palm on his discman.
Amazing! I was just blown away by the whole situation of Idaho being on TV. Good thing I taped it, because I was in another world watching it the first time. I noticed some good posters in the boy's room, like Tindersticks and Interpol. The producers obviously have good taste.
One of the most far-fetched shows I've ever witnessed! But it kept my interest. I was in heaven watching a television drama with Idaho in the back. It's kinda like 'when pigs fly' and pigs have now flown. Deepest congrats Jeff. Now let's just hope the show stays on the air long enough to pay for the next 10 Idaho cds. :-)
I was watching Extreme home whatever (sorry) and kept seeing the ads for this show, ended up watching and kept going... "is that...?" I totally agree with Ron, it's unbelievable to hear Idaho on a major show. Show wasn't that bad either, them Smallville guys do good work. Congrats Jeff!
You know life is good when you're listening to IDAHO in the background of a TV show...
Awesome job, Jeff. Great stuff. A couple of the more "song-like" pieces sound like they could be on the next IDAHO CD. (Are they?) And I love how you snuck "Hearts of Palm" into the kid's headphones. Very funny. Good use of "On the Shore". Did you write/record that punk song? I know you didn't do the vocal. LOL. Who's the girl that did vocals on a couple songs?
And the biggest question... How did you land the job?
the show was ok, but it was great to hear some idaho songs, the new stuff written for the show was great. That sucks that ABC has to show some damn commercial during the credits, Jeffs name was in like size 2 font
i don't know, but it's pretty fucking cool to hear Idaho songs on a TV show. fucking just made my shitty day a whole lot better!
so cool...you better win an Emmy or whatever it is composers win...so awesome to watch and hear that piano...beautiful
Wow Jeff - your version of that Dashboard Confessional song is surprisingly true to the original.
Kudos to you Jeff!!! Great Job!!!
Luv,
HeFfE
ps. That shaky camera technique sure gets on my fucking nerves...
Jeezus Jeff. That's some gig to get. Hope the tv show matches up to the music. Don't matter anyway though; I don't watch much tv and the chances are it won't make it over here for a few years. Still, if it gets broadcast I'll keep my eyes shut and my ears open. Just sit there on my fattening rump and listen...
congrats Jeff, will be sure to keep my eyes and ears open.
Excellent! I will be sure to watch,.. and listen ;-).
congratulations jeff, thats awesome.
congrats jeff. great gig.
But does this mean the Idaho CD will be delayed further?
the show actually sounds decent. i'm amazed. i know the music will be good.
Yes. Very cool. Most TV music makes my head hurt. This will be a welcome change.
That's incredible Jeff! You should post this news on the news page for the lazy people who only check that once in a while.
congrats! I'll have to check that out. that's great news.
*waves lighter*
Congrats...hope it has a long run and pays for many an Idaho record!
Oh my God! Congratulations. Making a note to set my VCR...
i got the composer job for a new show on ABC called "the days"....yes, im shocked as much as you are. it airs sunday july 18th at 10pm. and is followed by 5 episodes for now. ive had to write lots of silly stuff but there are some nice idaho moments there for all to hear
