RE: drummer wanted! | from M2May 29 2004 - 08:16

yeah, sure pickle. let's drop the "fucking drum thread" and instead start talking about politics. that's just perfect, considering this is a message board based around a band... to talk about music.

what were we thinking, chatting about drums?!?!?! the

RE: drummer wanted! | from AndrewMay 29 2004 - 04:38

Someone needs to put ye olde Pickle to bed.

RE: drummer wanted! | from PICKLETHMay 29 2004 - 03:39

Time pickle comes back/ Puts this thread to bed. With a knife in the gut, Pickle says 'Repent, for the lord has spaketh, and the lord is a little drubk, but he means well, so indulge the grumpy fucker.'
And pickle. as the messneger, passeth on the wind of the lord, and the lord's bowels spaketh, lo, lose the fucking drum thread, for it groweth dumb and dull and useless. The lordeth gives a good exampleth, for, lo, observe the son of Bush, for he is truly struck, and therein ye want not to be.

RE: drummer wanted! | from Alex NiedtMay 28 2004 - 16:39

Saw The Moody Blues last night. Their drummers are pretty damn good. Impressive to watch them play at the same time, and they're perfectly in time with each other.

RE: drummer wanted! | from katie johnsonMay 10 2004 - 10:51

for sure! Dango is freakin awesome. They're playing at Cal State in a few days and I'm so stoked to watch them play. I've seen Dango play quite a few times, but have yet to watch Amber Pacific. I hope its all good.

RE: drummer wanted! | from slaterdaysApr 30 2004 - 06:25

watch out for DANGO of Amber Pacific.

Incredible drummer; Seattle band

RE: drummer wanted! | from the silence kitApr 29 2004 - 13:22

yeah so nick's right though. i am also in the band and we need a drummer. the bands you're all mentioning are good and we like them too. if you play drums like that or know someone who does, send them here: http://www.thesilencekit.com please!
thanks-

RE: drummer wanted! | from Jeff B.Mar 24 2004 - 13:17

anyone know Steve Jordan or Charley Drayton? ummmmm, tasty stuff!!!!!!!!!!!! check out Keith Richards' solo records - the drumming is fantastic!

RE: drummer wanted! | from BarneyMar 18 2004 - 00:51

That geezer wot played for Ride was rather good.

RE: drummer wanted! | from stemsMar 17 2004 - 13:28

Unabashedly, I gotta say, my pal Steven Drozd from the Flaming Lips.

Most powerful drumming I've ever seen or heard, but he can also play with finesse.

In fact, he can play anything. He's one of those annoying people who can make a damn blade of grass sound like beautiful music.

RE: drummer wanted! | from greenMar 17 2004 - 12:43

jimmy chamberlin (sp?) from zwan.
and the drummer from 311. I don't remember names too well. also, the primus's drummer "brain". he did some work in Sausage too. I think the three of these guys are like machines (with personality).

RE: drummer wanted! | from ckMar 17 2004 - 12:04

Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and Billy Ficca (Televison).

RE: drummer wanted! | from JR OlssonMar 13 2004 - 10:15

hey ron, i listened to 'welcome to sky valley' today. it's one of my favourite albums still.

RE: drummer wanted! | from ronMar 11 2004 - 16:03

kyuss and fu manchu are some of my favorites. slo burn!

RE: drummer wanted! | from JR OlssonMar 11 2004 - 14:29

i liked some songs on moon pix. but all is not good. you are free is alot better.

and i was not using the word "heard" at the beginning of my last message. what i meant to write was "hard".

RE: drummer wanted! | from Alex NiedtMar 11 2004 - 14:12

All I know is that the drummer from Dirty Three playing on Cat Power's "Moon Pix" is some of the absolute worst drumming I've ever heard. Just one of the many reasons I don't like that CD...

RE: drummer wanted! | from JR OlssonMar 11 2004 - 11:48

sometimes i have a heard time listening to dirty three because of the drummer. but most often i think he is absolutely brilliant. but i haven't seen them live.

mr pedro the lion himself david bazan is a very good drummer as well. his work on the very first unwed sailor release 'firecracker' is great.

and who ever plays drums on jason molinas magnolia electric co cd that was released last year is SO good as well.

a steady hand is all i am after when it comes to drumming.

RE: drummer wanted! | from DeanMar 10 2004 - 01:52

Codeines drummer is Doug Scharin. Also check out his fantastic work with Rex.

RE: drummer wanted! | from Alex NiedtMar 09 2004 - 11:50

Hey Brian. When I saw Red Hot Chili Peppers in fourth grade, the singer sprained his ankle on stage 'cause he was dancing around so crazily. So he hobbled off the stage and came back with a freakin' cane and starts dancing again the exact same way, but with this grandpa-looking cane for support. It was hilarious. So I really don't even remember anything about the drummer other than he was damn good.

RE: drummer wanted! | from cMar 09 2004 - 09:42

I also forgot to mention Tony Williams - he drummed with Miles Davis in the 1960's and some of the stuff he did was/is mindblowing. Especially on the album "Filles De Kilimanjaro". Amazing stuff.

RE: drummer wanted! | from KeithMar 09 2004 - 08:50

Yeah I agree, that drummer from Codiene has SUCH restraint. I highly doubt they did the White Birch with a click track, but he NEVER rushes. So hard to do at those tempos. And good call on Aphex Twin, although in that style I think Squarepusher has him beat.

RE: drummer wanted! | from ckMar 09 2004 - 06:06

stephen gadd

RE: drummer wanted! | from brianMar 09 2004 - 01:30

speaking of tearing up a kit, the most powerful performance i've seen was Chad Smith of the RHCP a couple years ago. he broke 3 sticks in barely 20 seconds, broke the head on his snare cause he was so mad at the end of the song, then broke another stick a few seconds into the next song on the backup snare, but he never missed a beat.

RE: drummer wanted! | from susan331Mar 09 2004 - 00:19

So many times it's not about technique-- a perfect technique doesn't mean much if you don't have style or personality or presence or some other quality that makes you interesting, I think. I'd take an imperfect drummer with style over a perfect one with none anyday.

Oh, and I forgot Mo Tucker. :-)

RE: drummer wanted! | from mplasterMar 08 2004 - 22:35

Stewart Copeland.
Steve Jansen (japan/david sylvian)- not really phenomenal technique or anything, but definately plays with amazing "feel." Terry Bickers (levitation). awesome.
for some reason i always thought that Chris Sharrock, the drummer for Icicle Works (remember them?) had something to him that fit really well in the 80's alt-rock thing. very full and animated. i dunno..... ummmm. who else?....

honorable mention has to go to the drummers of Codeine and BluetileLounge just for being able to play so darn

RE: drummer wanted! | from susan331Mar 08 2004 - 21:45

I was just about to mention John Bonham, who's probably my favorite drummer of all time, dammitall! I totally appreciate the subtlety of minimalistic drumming, but I seem to gravitate more towards
people who, to put it mildly, tear shit up. To wit: John Densmore,
Joe Easley (The Dismemberment Plan),
Stephen Morris (Joy Division),
Neko Case, Kate Schellenbach (Luscious Jackson), Sam Fogarino (Interpol), Joey Peters (Grant Lee Buffalo) Damon Reece (Spiritualized), and Carl Turney (Clinic).

I forget her name, but Steve Wynn has an awesome drummer last year at SXSW-- by the end of the set she was sweating buckets and bashing the cymbals off their stands. Rock-and-fucking-roll, kids!

RE: drummer wanted! | from KeithMar 08 2004 - 19:13

He needs no mentioning, the shuffle on Fool in The Rain automatically makes him the most rockin' drummer ever.

RE: drummer wanted! | from jeffMar 08 2004 - 17:36

isnt bonzo lead zeppellin worth mentioning? i mean common

RE: drummer wanted! | from Alex NiedtMar 08 2004 - 13:45

I'll second Boris Williams and Stephen Morris. I've always been inspired by their drumming, as well as Tim Mooney's work on AMC's "Mercury" (very original/unorthodox) and RHP's Anthony Koutsos. I love his "military-styled" stuff. It's so graceful, powerful (emotionally), and musical.

RE: drummer wanted! | from jeremyMar 08 2004 - 07:31

John Convertino of Calexico.

RE: drummer wanted! | from cMar 08 2004 - 05:24

stewart copeland - he's another favorite of mine - don't know how i forgot him.

and also jaki liezbiet (i know i spelled that wrong) from Can.

RE: drummer wanted! | from Donnie DMar 08 2004 - 03:04

Stewart Copeland and Doug Scharin. By the way, that was Lol Tolhurst on seventen seconds. the worlds worst and most robotic drummer. In many years with the band he never got more creative or emotional in his drumming.

RE: drummer wanted! | from JR OlssonMar 08 2004 - 02:48

along with some of the drummers already mentioned i really dig brant bjork. he was the drummer in kyuss and fu manchu. his solo album from 1999 called 'jalamanta' (where he handles all instruments) is a masterpiece.

RE: drummer wanted! | from brianMar 07 2004 - 21:43

i've always liked:

RE: drummer wanted! | from Alex NiedtMar 07 2004 - 15:09

Yeah Jan. It's pretty pathetic when Fab Moretti imitates The Cure's drum machine circa the "Seventeen Seconds" album.

RE: drummer wanted! | from adamMar 07 2004 - 14:36

Don't forget neil peart. seriously. He's the best drummer in the world.

RE: drummer wanted! | from jan from belgiumMar 07 2004 - 12:20

josh homme in his new project "the eagles of death metal", he always plays the same patterns, or how do you call it, but it's verry effective and you know, josh homme, the king of cool behind a drumset, way too cool.

the worst drummers I know are fab moretti from the strokes and the drummer from coldplay no style, no talent, just nothing

RE: drummer wanted! | from ronMar 06 2004 - 15:06

favortie drummers: Matt Cameron (formerly of Soundgarden, now w/ Pearl Jam): the guy is absolutely insane. he's got a sense of time that no one else has. Danny Carey is also insanely original. some of the shit he does i just have to laugh at b/c his sense of timing and placement and accent is ridiculous. i know he's not known for his drumming anymore (unfortunately), but Dave Grohl is a powerhouse. those nirvana records wouldn't have been what they are w/o him. and, of course, i love the drumming on all the IDAHO stuff. weird stops; there's less decay on some of the cymbol crashes... the abruptness of it all is really original and perfect for the songs.

RE: drummer wanted! | from KeithMar 06 2004 - 14:35

Joey Waronker's drumming is excellent, he has such a solid feel and knows how to serve a song (what a concept). Jeff's is also very tasty, just like everything he does.

My favorite drummer, hands down is Bill Stewart. That guy is unbelievable. Elvin Jones of course. One of my favorite drummers right now is Damon Atkinson from Hey Mercedes/Braid.

Oh, and that guy from Hella, he's insane.

RE: drummer wanted! | from cMar 06 2004 - 13:31

my favorite drummers are terry chambers (XTC), mik glaisher (comsat angels), brendan canty (fugazi), and paul ferguson (killing joke).

RE: drummer wanted! | from David T.Mar 05 2004 - 20:49

Hey Alex, I've seen Danny Carey play, and I know exactly what you mean. If you close your eyes you swear he has to have three hands. The one-handed snare roll/opposite-handed tom roll/double bass patterns are inhuman. I don't think I could ever do a single part of anything he did when I saw him last year. But he sure seems to do it all effortlessly.

RE: drummer wanted! | from Alex NiedtMar 05 2004 - 20:31

On Idaho records, I'd have to say Joey Waronker's drumming on "Alas" is my favorite. But I love Jeff's drumming on "Hearts Of Palm." It's so powerful... steady and dead-on accurate, too. I also enjoy Alex Kimmel's drumming on "Levitate" a lot. I'm a sucker for those brush swishes. Seems like a lot of my favorite songs have them.

RE: drummer wanted! | from AndrewMar 05 2004 - 20:23

Speaking of drummers, who is your favorite drummer? I don't know a lot about drums, but I'm curious to know who some of your favorite players are.
