RE: do idaho fans listen to stereolab? | from stemsFeb 29 2004 - 10:34

gibbs, I've pained myself as a non-fan of S'Lab, but I do appreciate their aesthetic and have heard many of their records. The one that's always moved me most is an early one called "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music".

it's odd that people are mentioning stereolab, i have been hesitant to buy one of their albums (even though they are linked to alot of chicago bands which i love) and i read about them all the time.
i think i will make them my next purchase, any suggestions?

also, i have been listening to The Notwist like its going out of style lately, the album Neon Golden is one of the most amazing sounds I have heard in a long time. It's one of those albums you can play all the way through.

I should clarify that I was bored by the Stereolab portion of that show. The Lips kicked out a smoker! Maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind...

Seth, no I didn't see them, that was just a page I found online while researching I D A H O shows. that guy was lucky.

I'll have to check out Margarine Eclipse. I have friends that are Stereolab FANATICS and frankly I never understood. I have heard many of their records but not in the past 3-4 years. They have always had an individual song or two I liked well enough on their records but overall I always thought they got too samey and very little stood out to me. I saw them play with the Flaming Lips in 1994 and while everyone else seemed to sit in rapture I was bored to tears.

hey seth - the new album certainly has that classic 'Lab sound, it's just that the songs are so much stronger than they've been in the past(IMHO). trust me, i had the same reservations about the new one, b/c I thought Sound-dust was pretty weak. but defintely give M.E. a chance.

Brian - I checked out that page. You saw Slowdive live? Damn!

I'd definitely like to give the new album a listen, but unless it's a real departure from what they've done for the last several years I'll probably pass on buying it.

Strangely, I heard the upcoming Blonde Redhead album the other day which is very Stereolab-ish and LOVED it.

it's funny you mention stereolab... i've always enjoyed their records, but they were never a favorite of mine. until now - i got "margerine eclipse" a few weeks ago and I can't stop playing it. I think it's BY FAR their best album yet, I'm actually stunned by how strong the actual songs are.. prior to this, I always felt that their overall "sound" was appealing, but the songs themselves didn't stand up to repeated listening. "Margerine Eclipse" however is a whole different story. And not to be morbid (or show any disrespect), but I can't help but wonder if Mary Hansen's death had anything to do with it? I guess it doesn't make a difference, all I know is that I consider M.E. to be a shocking masterpiece - and I never thought I would say that about any 'Lab album.

hey there...i am a long time idaho fan (since my girlfriend picked up this way out in an indie store because she thought the cover art was cool)...i recently started getting into stereolab, a band that i always knew about but for some reason decided to ignore. i really, really love their music now and i was wondering if other idaho fans have had the same experience of ignoring music for a long time because they thought they wouldn't like it, only to realize that the music is actually pretty fantastic and well done.

i really like the stereolab albums "cobra and phases..." and the new "margerine eclipse."
