RE: Elliot Smith suicide | from Alex NiedtJul 18 2004 - 21:45
I just read that the album he was recording before his death is going to be released soon.

Yeah, Richie Lee. Spiritualized memorialize him on their new rec. I saw Acetone open for them once. Quite the hell of a show.
Wasn't terribly familiar with Elliot's work, but I liked what I heard. Such a cruel pity.
I'd like to know more about the investigation into his death, but I tire of conspiracy theories ala Kurt C.
Others here have name checked some greats felled by their own hands.
A toast to them. A toast to absent friends. Elliot, Richie, Kurt, Ian, et al. These guys made music that really spoke to a lot of people. They are, indeed, like friends.
The coroner refused to put "suicide" down on hs report. The police are reopening the case, from what I've read.
I read the other day that his death isn't being confirmed as a suicide anymore, and that it's still under investigation.
there are a whole lot of elliott smith live songs at http://lido.binaryops.com/
i wouldn't say fantastic soundquality though.
Heh. People still do that at the Abbey Road studios, too. Someone once told me they had to paint the exterior walls every fortnight because people kept covering them with messages for the Beatles.
The radio program New Ground aired a tribute to Elliott over the weekend; it's archived online if you would like to hear it:

My girlfriend grew up in Macclesfield, round the corner from the house that Ian Curtis hung himself in. She was too young to know about it at the time, but, as she grew up she grew to loathe the tourists that kept hanging around the house. They hung around this little terraced place with completely new families in, and kept scrawling graffitti on the wall. Ian Curtis killed himself in 1980, and this was still going on into the '90's. Don't let that sorta shit be Elliott Smith's eulogy.
To life...
suicide
Not to be morbid but.......how did Richie Lee die? Drug overdose?
Richie Lee died on July 23, 2001.
Richie Lee?
bummer. i had'nt heard about him.
so much for acetone.
what a shame...
Joachim, you should add Richie Lee from Acetone to your collection. It's sad to see something coming from the lyrics. Although most poets/songwriters have to dig deep for their work.
Please don't leave out Ian Curtis.
jeff buckley, kurt cobain, layne staley, elliot smith. my record collection is turning into a requiem.
nick drake and tim buckley as many others has always been in the 'dead hero' section. i really hate to reconstruct and seek for hidden meanings in the lyrics once again, but this behavioural pattern seems to carry on.
Elliot was one of the people that made my life a better place to be. I'm really gutted by this and the thought of what an awful dark place he must have been in to do it. At least he made his little mark on this world.
Elliott Smith: bad.
This: worse

I'm so tired of watching the good ones go.
I still can't believe he stuck himself in the heart.
Here's a nice quote from Rolling Stone: ...While Smith's tragic end will no doubt seal his legacy as a Drake-like poet of gloom, he thought such focus wasn't fair to the whole scope of his work. "The 'depressing' thing is a superficial tag," he said. "Everybody gets a tag. If you listen to a Velvet Underground record, you don't think, 'Godfathers of Punk.' You just think, 'This sounds great.' The tags are there in order to help try to sell something by giving it a name that's going to stick in somebody's memory. But it doesn't describe it. So 'depressing' isn't a word I would use to describe my music. BUT THERE IS SOME SADNESS IN IT -- THERE HAS TO BE, SO THAT THE HAPPINESS IN IT WILL MATTER."
That's a wonderful article. Thanks Susan.
They're playing him on the radio right now. I'm too shattered.
I think this best summarizes what happened:

steven paul (elliott) smith. august 6, 1969 – october 21, 2003.
at the time of his death, elliott was recording his sixth album, “from a basement on the hill”.
Jesus. I just read about it on a music news page. Died from a self inflicted knife wound to the chest. Sad. Another good guy gone.
I'm not an Elliot Smith fan, but I had no idea. When did this happen???
Has anyone else heard about this? Apparently he stabbed himself in the chest. Are there any other fans in mourning on this message board?
