I really liked Transatlantisism, it reminded me a little of the Lily's Eccsame The Photon Band album.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from Rob SDec 12 2004 - 02:22

Hey Ali,

Managed to score the Montage album on a recent holiday to the US. I'd imagine that the left banke stuff is better tho. It's pretty cool. I'll do you a copy if you'd like? Reply back to me at minorache@hotmail.com
Oh yeah still think DCFC are a bit soft.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from RaztroDec 11 2004 - 09:59

I really can't stand them.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from Alex NiedtDec 06 2004 - 20:10

I heard some of their stuff recently. It could be a lot worse. But I basically agree with Adam's post above.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from adamDec 06 2004 - 14:40

DCFC totally suck. Reminds me of Blink 182 when the guitar player sings. Same kind of rudimentary juvenile melody. total fuckin garbage.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from ChrisDec 06 2004 - 13:03

There's less there than meets the eye. "One of the best contemporary songwriters"? Please. There are entire CLASSES of writers better than Gibbard. Shins, New Pornographers, Spoon, Rogue Wave, Will Oldham, the Caribbean -- the list goes on and on.

It's not that he's actively bad, though. He just makes the mistake of believing that his musings warrant five- or six-minute maunderings. Keith said it best --they're poems set to music, not songs. Where's the structure? The interlocking of words and music?

Then there's the Postal Service. Wow -- what a stretch.

Compare Gibbard's best songs to something tossed off by the Millenium and you'll see: He has a lot to learn.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from triple dDec 03 2004 - 16:34

I recently saw DCFC in Atlanta and thought it was an amazing show. I guess it's a lot like the what they say in the used car business: There's an ass for every seat.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from susan331Oct 09 2004 - 10:47

I interviewed DCFC when The Photo Album came out and they are fantastically-nice people. However, their songs bore me to death, and they essentially play their albums note-for-note in a live setting. Yawn....

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from ronOct 09 2004 - 07:31

i just saw these guys live with pearl jam. i was not impressed with their live show at all. peronally, i like ben gibbard best with just a guitar. they just seem like a band that doesn't have much direction. they weren't horrible, but... maybe it has something to do with the fact that neil young joing pearl jam onstage later and they jammed out 6 songs and it was the best performance i've ever seen by anyone ever!

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from doodlesOct 08 2004 - 21:46

can someone please tell me why this band is so big? i dont get it.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from cagainNov 09 2003 - 11:52

hmm.. that's strange... that very same line touches my gag reflex and makes me want to vomit. to each his own i guess.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from KernNov 09 2003 - 06:58

I love the album!
and I think it`s one of the best albums of this year!
a line like this one just touches my heart:
"and i'll sit and wonder
of every love that could've been
if i'd only thought of something charming to say."

Postal Service "Give Up" is also so great and it was one of the best records to listen to this summer.
and in addition they`re ion the best german label Grand Hotel van Cleef.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from aliOct 29 2003 - 16:45

hello rob s,

maybe you could get it in the internet or something? keep an eye out for it anyways, its very special and you will cherish it

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from andOct 27 2003 - 22:39

ditto. oh, and nope.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from scoobidooOct 24 2003 - 01:17

I agree with HNB. DCFC is a great band and they really try to sound differently. I mean, this is not just a band that plug the jack on the amp and play basic riffs. You can hear it on their sophisticated prodution. They're getting better...

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from Rob SOct 24 2003 - 01:05

hey Ali,
I'll have a listen, thanks. BTW I never could get a hold of a LEFTE BANKE album.
That anthology appears to be deleted.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from HNBOct 23 2003 - 15:37

Sometimes it makes me wonder what kind of problems some of you guys have. If you don't like DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, then just don't listen to them. "Transatlanticism", though, is a wonderful album. Ben Gibbard is one of the best contemporary songwriters, and "Passenger Seat" reminds me too of some of Jeff Martin's work. And what a beautiful reminder it is, as Jeff hasn't put anything out for a while. But this is no contest. Gibbard's wonderful and intelligent songwriting doesn't take anything away from IDAHO. I'm glad with the POSTAL SERVICE's "Give Up" and DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE's "Transatlanticism" the way they are. But, as always with music, opinions may differ.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from Seth HowardOct 22 2003 - 00:17

Yeah. Don't hold back on my account. The Postal Service is still better than 95% of the garbage that's out there, but let's face it. It's a cash-in and given what Mr. Gibbard is capable of as a songwriter, I think it seriously sucks.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from AndrewOct 21 2003 - 20:58

Yeah, it's more fun that way

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from AlexOct 21 2003 - 20:57

It's not like he's going to hunt you down and kill you. Please voice whatever opinion you may have.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from aliOct 21 2003 - 17:09

ive not got the record but im gonna buy it on the strengh of the postal service album which has some amazing shit on it, and that bens got an amzing voice, i dont want to praise the postal service too highly though because im really concerned about getting seth started on them

hello rob s, have you heard james yorkstone yet? i think youd like him

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from the original nopeOct 20 2003 - 16:38

crap music. overdone. band should be called "7 years too late".

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from KeithOct 20 2003 - 15:56

Agreed. The singer is all over the place. He runs on and on without singing any phrases or coherent melodies. Sounds like he writes poems and tries to set them to music. Their cover of All is Full of Love isn't too bad though.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from Seth HowardOct 20 2003 - 15:01

I have to agree. I think "We Have The Facts" is the last good album these guys made, and don't even get me started on The Postal Service.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from DanOct 20 2003 - 08:39

Personally, I think DCFC suck ass. That guys voice is just so whiny and the vocals so overly wrought and earnest. Makes me wanna fuckin puke. That's me.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from Rob sOct 20 2003 - 03:10

Andy, I was so gonna post that exact message. It's not a bad album... but all of their albums are patchy at best.

RE: Death Cab for Cutie | from cOct 19 2003 - 14:25

It does, actually. I'm a little disappointed with the record, though. I like it better than "Photo Album", but it's still not nearly as great as "we have the facts..." One song in particular, I think its called "sound of settling" is so cheesy it gives me chills...

Passenger Seat | from AndyOct 18 2003 - 11:31

Anyone hear track #7 "Passenger Seat" off of their new record "Transatlanticism". It sounds very Idaho a la Levitate. What do ya think?
