Very well put, Brian.

Here are some mics that get a lot of use for guitar amps (from most expensive to least - US prices)

Royer R-121
Coles 4038
Beyerdynamic ribbon mics
Sennheiser MD421
Sennheiser 409 and e609
Shure SM57

i came to like the tones of recording direct when that was the only way i had to record at the time. as i slowly made progressions to and through multi track recorders and to mics, i always wound up splitting the guitar signal for any track so that i would have both a mic on whatever amp with or without effects and a direct signal with or without effects for clarity. this also is what led me to the joys of panning different tones and textures left and right.

If you're on a budget, definitely go with a 57. Personally, I wouldn't recommend recording direct. You lose any sense of air moving.

shure 57 & 58. but also don't forget about recording guitars direct by splitting signals with an A/b box. works for me.
