RE: New idea | from edMay 20 2003 - 19:40
I like this idea. It is always nice to hear a different take on a song. Sure some are bad, but the ones that are good are worth it.

Why not try an IDAHO cover in the style of AC/DC - complete with cromagnon drum beats and the plaintif wailing vocals in the style of the late great Mr. Scott.
I can almost hear it now...
I might take a crack at one just for fun.
this is funny
My recording of "Scrawny" begins today. I've decided to take a more acoustic route.
i actually had this idea a few years ago and i like the idea of paying tribute to I D A H O and can host the files and info if needed.
great idea Burris! I'm in, with whoever else wants to do it. This could be fun. I think i've got a couple tunes all ready sussed out. I agree with Alex, and herrel, and olssen. This could be cool, don't be so harsh. Kozelek made that album, he owned those songs, he made those songs his. Not, to imply that the same can be done here, or should be. This is obviously a completely different situation. But, nonetheless, itseems like it would be a great oppurtunity to interface with other idaho fans, and really i'm quite curious to see what would happen. your humble servant, jeff.
i think its a decent idea, but i think the amount of time and effort that would be put into it could be better spent on creating something tottally new and original, know what im sayin?
it would be a fun challenge though... i just would rather have the finished product be more of a part of myself... but whoever wants to do it should do it, you know. do what you wanna do think for yoourself and all that.
we used to do 'apricots' with Gardin as full band, I always thought it was unfortunate that is wasn't an original, that's how good it was -the song itself-.
still is.
or was.
what! bon scott is fantastic!
I'm not saying that you can't re-interperet an Idaho song, I'm just saying that it would most likely not be an improvement over the original. Some songs lend themselves to being changed, like those in the AC/DC catalogue.
Most vocalists are going to be an improvement over Bon Scott.
Whereas any attempt to change the sound of an Idaho tune would probably be a step backwards, because often the sound is what makes the songs so great.
Still, I'd be into hearing what you guys come up with.
yea Ron, i think some guys here don't see how to play a cover with your band. look at mark kozelek. you don't have to play like the original. play like yourself. anyone can play an idaho song. anyone can play any song, by any band. it's all about how you arrenge it.
that's why i really don't agree with Ryan.
guys: i think that not reproducing an Idaho song is the whole point. we're not Jeff & JB, so why would we try to just copy their stuff? any monkey could do that, ya know? take a look at Kozelek's cover of the AC/DC stuff.
I know you all have to be at least a little bit curious about what the songs would sound like, right? Whether or not it would be a success or not is unknown, but either way, you must admit that it would be a great musical learning experience for the participants and the listeners. Ryan, that's not arrogant at all. You're right. And actually, I think it would be really interesting to play the chords with all 6 strings, not actually changing any chord of course, but maybe adding a tone or two common to each chord. I hope that makes sense. I'm horrible at explaining this stuff with the correct terms.
maybe im being being arrogant, but the whole world of alternate tunings is really not that hard to get to grips with after a while, in some respects it can make a song easier to work out, all you do (with idaho) is dampen the first and 6th strings while you play, which is easy and then try to retune the open strings to the notes that you can hear present throughout most of the song, once youve got the tuning, the rest can fall into place easier than you think, go on try it for yourself !
My last band covered Bass Crawl - I wince everytime I think about it.... It was played too fast, and with none of the finesse... I think it's probably best left to the "experts".
This is a fun idea, but the problem is they sort of rigged the music so it can't be re-done. Jeff's voice is unique, the guitars are unique, the chord progressions are deceptively tricky. I'm not sure how well the tunes would work if they were completely re-interpereted, because the aformentioned things are often what makes them so great. Has anyone here actually pulled off an Idaho cover?
i don't really see the harm in it. if you don't want to hear the covers, you don't have to.
i kind of like the idea and knowing this board, it's gonna be a three cd package.
i think if someone else did an IDAHO cover, it would just be corny. leave it to the pros, fellas.
I think it's a great idea. If Jeff and the other past/present Idaho crew approved, it probably wouldn't be half bad. And hey, nothing could be worse than the American Music Club tribute album. From what I've heard, the talent on this message board far exceeds most of the performers on that and many other tribute/covers albums.
I wonder what IDAHO front office thinks of this...
I agree with I.
while I think this would be amusing...(a la Weird Al), IDAHO is a gift not to be messed with in my opinion
Hayden fans did a fab one of these. I think they are working on a second? Not sure how we'd all deal with the four string odd tunings etc mind.
Dude...no
How about this:
Loads of us have a go at recording covers/interpretations of fave idaho songs, send them to a nominated person who puts them on a site, we all vote on our faves then do artwork and burn CD's. This would stricktly be a novelty for us.
