RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from aliOct 23 2002 - 14:15

hi emilie and team, i worked out this version of hearts of palm earlier on today and im quite pleased with it, i'm not sure if its what jeff plays, but it doesnt sound too far off

first retune your guitar to egdebe (take the a string down 2 frets and the g string down 3 frets)

then while playing you have to dampen the first and sixth strings ( or for the real authentic idaho sound, remove them )

the first four chords of the first verse are

x 6 6 6 0 x
x 9 9 9 0 x
x 7 7 5 7 x
x 6 6 0 4 x

(hammer on and off the little finger on the e string on the last chord)

then the 4 chords of the next bit which are repeated for ages are

x 6 6 9 0 x
x 2 2 5 5 x
x 9 9 12 12 x
x 4 4 7 0 x

enjoy

Hey Ali and gang,
How right you are. I never looked at that tuning that way. I just muck around til it sounds ok. I have my guitar set up to support this tuning now. That's the way Emilie!! keep tinkering, eventually you shall have some songs to share with us. Yes. I do have "hope and Adams". Great album.

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from EmilieOct 21 2002 - 18:18

Hey thank you very much Rob, Ali and Christian!

Im glad that you still talk to me even if I am a Thief of magic...

Hey but I ve started to compose my own songs since few months (with no lyrics though because I totally suck in composing, sounds really kitsh and absolutely horrible)

Putting my fingers everywhere.. Im not that bad i think, im experimenting new sounds with slides, chords that i never saw ...

Sounds OK

I like the mysterious feeling of being someone when you create something like inventing a song...
Creating something unique, that has never been done before...pretty cool...

ps Im going to see Idaho tomorrow in Montreal...ill talk to you about the show later!

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from aliOct 21 2002 - 15:26

i agree that in working out how to play a songs weird tuning it can lose it's magic so i dont do it as much unless it's something i really want to know. though i also find it rewarding, at least at first to be able to play new things like nick drake or rhp and its inspiring to bring that back to your own material so it works both ways.

dont give up on the song emelie in the first 2 bits the guitar is played very slowly and cleanly without any other instruments which should help and it would make a nice song to sing, ill try work it out for you sometime

hey rob, i left a message for you on the favourite song of all time thread.

if you transpose your tuning up a semitone then it becomes dadf#ad which is probably easier to tune to from standard tuning. this is also called open d major, quite a popular tuning, according to my alternative tunings book songs written in this tuning include chelsea morning and both sides now by joni mitchell and its also used by ry cooder and eric clapton among others.

have you got wheats hope and adams, virtually all the songs sound like there in cgcgcd which is a really nice tuning and its a really great record

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from EmilieOct 17 2002 - 11:09

Okay you too are weird people lol :D...

I think ill give up to figure out this song...i will listen to it ...to keep all the magic...:)

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from Rob sOct 17 2002 - 07:25

Me too.

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from christianOct 17 2002 - 05:19

i have to agree w/ rob on figuring out other people's songs. i know that when i figure out a favorite song of mine, written by someone else, it loses some of the magic. i don't know how else to explain it. and i didn't learn how to play the guitar by picking out already written songs - i "learned" by putting my fingers in different places on the fretboard and discovering what kings of sounds/chords i could make (this was when i was 10 or 11 years old). in fact i had been playing the guitar for about 7 or 8 years before i even knew what the standard 6-string tuning was. not that i cared. just my opinion!

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from Rob SOct 16 2002 - 18:31

Jeff usually uses other tunings.. that's why you may be having trouble... plus it doesn't help that he uses a 4 stringed guitar.

My latest tuning is this:
C# G# D# F G# D#

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from EmilieOct 16 2002 - 17:34

But by ear, Hearts of palm, from "Terrified before..." it goes like:

Am / C/ G/ D

But I dont know the beginning of the song. Some weird chords...

Thats what i know.

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from EmilieOct 16 2002 - 17:29

Well you are the only one that i know who never learn songs frow their favorite bands...

Anyway i dont know anything about the tuning, B. was just kidding, or I have a double personality who knows the tuning!

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from Rob SOct 16 2002 - 17:10

I learned by playing and writing my own stuff. I don't know any songs by other bands... although I do get inspiration from other bands songs. What about Jeff's tunings?

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from EmilieOct 16 2002 - 14:28

Rob,

"I find it a little creepy working out other bands songs..."

How do you learn to play guitar?

Theres a beginning in everything and when you are trying to learn something, you will have first to imitate, even the Greek people know that :D

Second, Im playing guitar since 5 years and obviously, I really suck in composing songs, writing lyrics, and unfortunately i like to sing...

I think that theres nothing creepy in wanting to re-play the songs of who you admire, theres no cheating or whatever...

I thought that every musicians did that once...

And about the mystery...I think that it is very interesting to discover what he did to make suck a perfect sound...It makes the song more beautiful...

Thats what i think about that...

Do you play an instrument?

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from Rob sOct 16 2002 - 06:56

What are some of Jeff's tunings? I've never bothered to figure them out. I find it a little creepy working out other bands songs... for me it kinda takes the mystery away from the song. I'd use these tunings for my own vices. Btw Emilie, this isn't supposed to be damning.

RE: Idaho's guitar tabs | from B.Oct 15 2002 - 15:56

Emilie,

I had it figured out about a year ago. Let me go back and try to knock it again. You may not be in the right tuning. That-jeff makes em tricky.
