RE: I was wondering what album would be a good one to start with, I am really into red house painters, and like slow core stuff, i have heard a couple songs off of three sheets to the wind, and liked it, | from DeanoSep 18 2002 - 01:53

It's like calling someones baby ugly!! Hurts even more when they know deep down that the baby IS ugly!!
Sweep has, to me, one of the most perfect lyrics ever written but 3 sheets has some lovely stuff on it too. It's always easy to pick out a few stinkers/cliches ( Could be so free but instead so dead??????? )but that should not detract from the good stuff.

dcs,

Now, now.

Do you think he might beat me up?
I know how artists can be when you say I really love your work except...

You might want to know that Idaho still plays songs off 3 Sheets in their live show. There's a good chance you'll hear Stare at the Sky, Alive Again, A Sound Awake, and Get You Back. Go to a show and tell Jeff how typical you find his imagery!

Oh, but it's not just the 'rock' number on 3 sheets that are sub par. The slow ones aren't up to snuff either. It's just that lyrically this album seems to me to be quite cliched. Martin conjures up the typical images that you would expect from slow music..for example "staring at the sky.."

"This way out" however contains moments of pure originality combined with sheer beauty...who else would lament, "wind a golden wire..."?

Bayonet rocks but has it's quiet moments. I love the last rocky spazz out on the final song ( only maybe )?? Totally agree with you re 3 sheets, it's all over the place and all the better for it. there's nothing wrong with rocking out every now and then. Would you have all your bands being one dimensional?? Funny how 3 sheets gets so many people wound up??

The Bayonet EP is actually the "rock" release. If you can think of Three Sheets as Sugar, think of Bayonet as Hüsker Dü. What are you lookiiiiiing forrrrrrrrrrrrrrr?

RE: I was wondering what album would be a good one to start with, I am really into red house painters, and like slow core stuff, i have heard a couple songs off of three sheets to the wind, and liked it, | from christianSep 17 2002 - 05:03

that's true. those are really the only two songs on 3 sheets that "rock". and since when did "rock" become a bad thing? besides 3 sheets is, i think, the most representative album of all the different facets of Idaho - there's rawk, quiet piano stuff, slower brooding beautiful stuff... it's all there.

I've got to go back and listen to 3 sheets. The way I remember it, after catapult and pomegranate nothing really "rocks."

I love fishing.

oh god, i know.. that one little line just ruins the whole album. because anyone who sings the word "wasted" in a song is obviously an alterna-rock wannabe loser.

RE: I was wondering what album would be a good one to start with, I am really into red house painters, and like slow core stuff, i have heard a couple songs off of three sheets to the wind, and liked it, | from NickSep 16 2002 - 12:14

Ok, this is ridiculous. Stop bitching about whether or not 3 Sheets is good or bad. It doesn't matter. Of all four Idaho cds I own, I agree that 3 Sheets is my least favorite, but it's still a lot better than most other albums out there and if this guy liked three songs off there, I say it's definitely worth buying. Buy 3 Sheets and know that it just gets better. With Idaho, though, you really can't lose.

Great lyrics?

what's that one...?

something about.."i feel my way through wasted"

Dude! The kegs are empty! Beer run!

I guess the sticker that accompanied three shites best exemplifies the problem I'm referring to...what was that quote? something about Jeff Martin being the next Kurt Cobain?

Don't get me wrong, I love Idaho, it's just that 3 sheets is a low point in their output.

You hate the way you won't sit back and love the ride....

This album has too many moods on it to be written off. melancholy piano songs, aggresive rockers, drifting and swirling epics...loads of great lyrics.

Nice to see people getting a bit fired up on this string though!!

alterna-rock garbage?!? clean the wax out of your ears, man. we all have our own tastes and opinions, but that's just ridiculous. shite indeed.

Oh I see. Chris is saying that because radio play was a "real possibility" and there were four people in the band I should excuse the alterna-rock garbage that litters '3 sheets'

C'mon! What shite.

RE: I was wondering what album would be a good one to start with, I am really into red house painters, and like slow core stuff, i have heard a couple songs off of three sheets to the wind, and liked it, | from chrisSep 15 2002 - 07:56

I have to disagree with all this 3 sheets bashing - you must understand where ID was at this point- it was the 4 man line up with Seta, Borden and Lewis - radio play for songs like catapult was a rel possibility- I agree that Jeff does much more beautiful things when there is less straight forward metalish riffs; but in the progression of their career, catapult fits perfectly.

Buy all the albums, listen chronologically, and revel in the beauty....

I like them all, but I think Levitate is the best one. I feel that the "hooks?" are a lot more subtle, so it makes for an interesting listen. it just feels like there aren't any shortcuts being taken, but I could say that about any idaho album. to jeff--you are one of the greatest songwriters in my opinion. I have think that these albums are all timeless.

As aforementioned, I'm no 3 Sheets fan, but I must concede that I think I cried the first time I heard that piano song on there, around track 7 or 8.

sheets is fab: a little smoooooooth perhaps and catapult is awful but the rest is pure lushness.

My personal favorite is The Forbidden EP, but it's kind of like picking a favorite ice cream flavor.

Righty-O, you are certainly in the minority, but so am I. Three Sheets is my least favorite Idaho CD by far. To me it just sounds such standard "alternative," save a couple of songs. In full perspective, it is Idaho, and it is a good CD, I just think it's their worst - to my ears, that is.

RE: I was wondering what album would be a good one to start with, I am really into red house painters, and like slow core stuff, i have heard a couple songs off of three sheets to the wind, and liked it, | from Righty-OSep 09 2002 - 12:39

Am I the only one who thinks that 3 sheets is kind of a stinker?

Maybe.

'This way out' on the other hand...moments of sublime beauty.

There is something to listening to each one in sequence. If you like slo-core, then Year After Year and the Palms EP (the first LP and EP, respectively) are great starting points. Then you get to hear Idaho go through their "rock" phase, their "introspective" phase, their "ethereal" phase, and their new "rock" phase.

3 Sheets to the Wind if you're a rocker
Hearts of Palm if you're a lover

Ummmm. I started loooong ago with This Way Out. I like that one quite a bit as it is more sonic than some of the others. But Hearts of Palm is a beatifully well rounded album. Levitate is a bit more thoughtful and experimental. We Were Young seems a nice mix of Levitate style meanderings and the sound-style (and some of the low voice recording) of This Way Out. Can you believe it I don't have the other ones? Can you order them here yet? Haven't checked, last time it appeared the shopping cart was broken.

Go for one of the first three. 3 sheets is probably the most accessible so great way to get a foot in.
I don't get levitate. :(

see.. i KNEW i forgot something... im such an idiot. and ALAS!.. what a great album. i think i always forget this one because the artwork is so... umm... non-descript, you know? anyhow, alas is great. okay, bottom line. save up all your money and buy every idaho album.

I think it's a great sign when people argue over a band's best album and you get nearly every album nominated. I don't think many bands can achieve that.

I think it depends. I personally would think Levitate would be the best way to go, but it depends how much rock you want and how much soundscape texture you want. I think every Idaho album will contain some of both, but the further you go back, the more rock and less soundscape, and vice versa as you approach their more recent albums. The is a total generalization, but I believe it to be true in general, so I said it. :)

Perhaps pick up "We Were Young and Needed the Money," find out what songs you like best, then find out what time period they were recorded, then buy the Idaho album closest to that time period? We Were Young would also serve as a good sampler for the band over their 12 years or so, I would think.

why haven't you eaten in six days exactly???

RE: I was wondering what album would be a good one | from mplasterAug 31 2002 - 22:40

nah nah.. ya'll got it all wrong. LEVITATE is where its at! :) honestly, like previously mentioned, there has not been any bad idaho recording, but it depends on what your ear takes to most easily first in order to get ya hooked. to me, the PALMS ep is a-freakin-mazing, very "Sad-core" -ish (good God whoever coined that term?!?!?) and Year After Year kinda follows after that. This Way Out is a bit more upbeat, kinda verging on almost-mid-90's indie rock. Three Sheets a bit more of that, but kinda in a much more aggressive and confident approach. Bayonet EP... hmm im not sure how to sum that one up. kinda inbetween 3Sheets and Forbidden. speaking of which, FOrbidden EP is also freakin AWESOME. Bass Crawl can NOT be equalled. *shudder* okay anyhow, what next... Hearts of Palm... more relaxed, very 'earthy' and a bit quieter.. more flowy... kinda the antithesis (well, within Idaho spectrum that is) of 3 sheets. and a GREAT banjo part (i THINK) on the title track. People Like Us is live. which brings us to LEVITATE, which can only be summed up by saying :: beautiful ::

and then theres the skyscrape single which has the OTHER best idaho song ever, "Star." [the best being 'levitate.']

okay folks, these are all just my opinions on how they sound to me which i was just using to describe to our new idaho friend how they come off to me. feel free to jump in and tell us all your take on some albums.

but the bottom line is:
make idaho's music a part of your life or you will miss out on a great deal of beauty and creativity.

the end.
oh yeah and please dont embarrass me if i left an album out. i havent eaten in six days... things are cloudy... 8*)

all idaho's albums are very good, but they have evolved quite a lot, so i's recommended starting with their first yer after year ? and then get them all sequentially and enjoy listening to their progression
