RE: Built to Spill | from badbrains2000Sep 19 2001 - 11:07

I live in manhattan and BTS is playing three dates here this week. I think they rule. So does Modest mouse. what other Idaho bands are any good.

RE: Built to Spill | from adamAug 31 2001 - 13:00

Let's agree to disagree re: MM, K?

Long live Idaho.

RE: Built to Spill | from VirginiaAug 31 2001 - 11:24

Um, adam, Modest Mouse are quite simply the best goddamn band alive. All in all, Idaho kick major ass as well, which is the true reason I continue to support this thread. Thanks.

RE: Built to Spill | from salamidudeAug 31 2001 - 09:29

Built To Spill`s new album is`nt that great, some good songs but does`nt stand up to the other BTS albums.
Modest Mouse don`t play the same song over and over.I heard that they blew BTS away at a BTS/MM show.

RE: Built to Spill | from macAug 31 2001 - 09:01

Ha!
I think Virginia and I are the only two people in the world who think "wavers" is their best. The later albums seem a little fluff imo.

RE: Built to Spill | from adamAug 30 2001 - 13:40

Modest Mouse always struck me as being too derivative of bts. That and they play the same damn song over and over......

More whammy bar please...... blech!!

RE: Built to Spill | from VirginiaAug 30 2001 - 12:23

I dig Modest Mouse.
Built to Spill's 'Ultimate Alt. Wavers' on C/Z is defining though.

RE: Built to Spill | from ashleyAug 30 2001 - 10:55

in case it mattered, or any one cares, i can't really stand anything by BTS.... just my 2 cents....

RE: Built to Spill | from DaveAug 30 2001 - 01:28

Anyone get BTS's new one? I got it a few weeks back and with the exception of the last two songs, Iwas awful tempted to play frisbee with it. It's been a few weeks now and it's grown on me since. The best two songs are still the last two and it's still their worst release yet, but that's much better than most other bands. Anyone else get this one? What did you think?

Quasi's new one came out just a few days ago - I'll have to get that when I get back to the States!

RE: Built to Spill | from FudlowJul 19 2001 - 01:40

CAN'T A MAN HAVE AN OPINION?

RE: Built to Spill | from adamJul 19 2001 - 00:14

it's okay fudlow, really, it's goona be okay. just breath. in and out.

RE: Built to Spill | from FudlowJul 18 2001 - 23:21

Again, that's just my opinion.

RE: Built to Spill | from FudlowJul 18 2001 - 22:04

I'm entitled to my opinion, arent I? Jeez, I thought this was a free country, but conformity sure runs rampid in music these days. Ride the bandwagon, everybody, cause you wont be liked if you dont(?) That guy is too whiny anyways, the Built To Spill guy, plus, what's he really saying? I'm way into lyrics, even hidden ones like old Dinosaur Jr., but man, I just have no clue with that BTS guy.

RE: Built to Spill | from DaveJul 18 2001 - 17:45

Built to Spill is good gravy. Big
fan. Anyone hear their new one that came out last week? I'm gonna get it soon. I heard it once a few months back and it was surprisingly classic rock-ish in many songs. There's one poppy number that harks back to Keep It Like a Secret called "Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss" that was absolutely amazing! Doug's a nice guy too.

RE: Built to Spill | from eraserheadJul 18 2001 - 06:28

notice definetely spelled two different ways.....whoa. Got to lay off the wild turkey.

RE: Built to Spill | from eraserheadJul 18 2001 - 06:24

check out "cortez the killer" covered by the church. definetely long and really well done. Not to get off the built to spill topic, they are definteley a decent band.

RE: Built to Spill | from John BerryJul 18 2001 - 03:54

I agree with Dan, the live record is a "piece of work" in the best sense. "Cortez the killer"? Not long enough.

RE: Built to Spill | from moronJul 17 2001 - 16:48

hey Fudlow, ( if that is indeed your REAL name...) what kinda smack are you talkin.... everything you said describing BTS is the polar opposite of what their music actually sounds like...
if you were trying to sound musically literate, try and find a band that you actually know something about.

RE: Built to Spill | from Fudlow InsagiJul 17 2001 - 00:31

I think Built To Spill is really lame, but Im quite picky with music. Its all powerchords and a non distinctive voice, mixed with really crappy 4/4 drum playing, not enough changes, transpositions or modulations. Typical post-indie. If you make music, do something different, for gods sake!!! I guess some people have very simple minds.

RE: Built to Spill | from Joe SandosaSep 19 2000 - 14:56

I love this band.

RE: Built to Spill | from AlwinSep 11 2000 - 08:17

I guess liking different albums it all depends on through which songs you have gotten to know them. The first soong I ever heard was "Car" (still one of my faveroutes). It took me a while before I bought any of their albums, but the time I did their most recent one was "Perfect from now on", so I bought that one. It's still a great record in my eyes alltough I can understand people saying it's to long. I just got struck by their sound. I love 'm dearly and have bought 3 other albums since. Including their latest studio-release "Keep it like a secret". Songs such as "Time Trap" clearly indicate they hav not lost their ability to write terrific pop/rock-songs (almost in 3-for-1 formula)!

RE: Built to Spill | from jeremy trueJun 22 2000 - 15:15

built to spill IS pretty good stuff, closer to Superchunk almost though- and i believe they ARE from Idaho. since IDAHO turned away from the strictly sadcore sound it's getting harder and harder to compare them to anyone! who would have thought that a bassoon or a "jews harp" would sound so good?!?! the BTS live album is excellent, even if their version of CORTEZ THE KILLER is maybe a bit LONG(16 + minutes?!)

RE: Built to Spill | from jonathanJun 13 2000 - 23:52

bts rules. i actually like "perfect from now" on the best. it was like an obsession for me, i listened to it over and over and every time there was something
new that i'd hear. in my opinion it is a brilliant album rich and dense. if you guys like these
bands you should check out death
cab for cutie's new album "we have
the facts and we're voting yes"
it is indie pop along similar
lines and it is really good stuff.

RE: Built to Spill | from baxterdogJun 10 2000 - 17:19

wow, built to spill and lotion! "twin falls" and "marijuana vietnam" by both respective bands are 2 of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

RE: Built to Spill | from mathildeJun 08 2000 - 08:52

Sigur Ros is a little the soulmate
of Idaho, at this moment.
Same intensity, same faithful
devotion to music.
Svefn-g-englar is magic!

RE: Built to Spill | from danJun 07 2000 - 13:51

I love the live record.

RE: Built to Spill | from Alan KyleJun 07 2000 - 08:00

Dear Dave,
I love Built to Spill too and have all three of their lps. My own personal fave is "there's nothing wrong with love" especially "in the morning", "car", and "twin falls" (a city in Idaho, I believe!)I must admit to being disappointed with the follow up, where the songs were too long and unfocussed to my ears, but thankfully "keep it like a secret" returned to the wonderful jerky sway that I loved them for. You probably know this but they've just released a live cd, but I haven't gotten it yet. I think they have a similar skewed view on indie rock like the great Idaho, but for great eccentric rock the only bands up there with Idaho for me are Shudder to Think, Lotion and Sparklehorse. But you do have good taste Dave! cheers, Alan.

I was just curious, does anyone listen
to Built to Spill? Their style is
kinda' different from Idaho, but I
could certainly see a lot of Idaho
fans liking them. Last I checked,
there was a healthy collection of
some of their album tracks at
www.scour.net . Another fine band
to check out there is Modest Mouse.
Both bands are probably putting out
the best indie rock in the Northwest
these days.

Does anyone else listen to these
guys?
