The Bob Mould thing is true! That guy is Mr Unnecessary Volume. Sugar were almost unbearable as a live entity because of this, no doubt the same was true with Husker Du.

hey butthead this is beavis. my girlfriend says shut up butthead

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from jeremyMay 11 2005 - 15:07

I just about lost my hearing at a My Morning Jacket gig. It was fun seeing the band members wave their long hair in unison like synchronized swimmers, or seaweed, but I had to sign for a couple of days following. Even Jason Molina's new band, Lord love 'em, were mighty loud when I saw them last Fall. Terrific, though, IMHO. Condoms work well over your ears if you don't have an earplug handy, BTW, if you don't mind the looks.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from ButtheadMay 11 2005 - 14:49

shut up, beavis! you're like ruining this post.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from BeavisMay 10 2005 - 15:16

you said "blown."

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from HannaMay 10 2005 - 04:20

I saw the Brunettes and the Shins last night. My left ear is still ringing, but that's because I was closer to the left speakers. Overall the show was at a pretty comfortable volume, save for the mic feedback at the beginning of the Brunettes set.

I saw Starflyer 59 2 summers ago, and it was ridiculously loud. I don't know what the keyboardist was thinking, but after that night, my ears were blown for a few days...

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from fdsfMay 09 2005 - 13:21

ha thats bullshit

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from PSMay 09 2005 - 13:15

I recall seeing Bob Mould doing an acoustic gig in a record shop. Even that was so loud he blew the PA.

Did you go and swallow the earplugs and put the morning-after pill in your ear again? No wonder you're half deaf!

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from dkMay 09 2005 - 04:17

We do have the morning after pill, but I was under the mistaken impression that ear plugs are like morning after pills. I also have trouble distinguishing my ass from my elbow.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from czar1May 08 2005 - 22:17

get 'em tied broski. good luck broski. keep em kummin

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from susan331 May 08 2005 - 20:40

Don't they have the morning-after pill where you live?

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from dkMay 08 2005 - 17:49

For the record: earplugs are not like condoms. Just ask the mothers of my three children.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from ronMay 07 2005 - 17:39

the loudest show i've ever heard was neil young with pearl jam this past fall... but holy shit did it sound amazing. i've never heard anything sound so great: lows, hi, mids, it was all there. and it was an indoor show, too, so... yeah...

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from JR OlssonMay 07 2005 - 01:36

I think it depends on what concert you are attending at. Listening to Idaho at a level that you have to use earplugs would not be a good thing. But if I see a band like Isis or Neurosis... I rather have earplugs and have them playing loud. Really loud.

I saw Isis live at a club a while ago, they played so loud, I had earplugs and I sat down during the show. The wall of sound facing me made me sleepy and I actually fell asleep sitting there. It was a nice little lullaby though.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from Alex NiedtMay 06 2005 - 20:13

I think it's pretty ridiculous that you should have to wear earplugs to go to a concert. That's bullshit. They should just learn how to not mix at 32105981203958125098 dB. Even the AMC show I went to in a little club was way too loud. Sounded like utter crap in the high end. So shrill...earplugs don't exactly fix that. If I ever played live, I'd have it pretty damn quiet...like an intimate slow jazz ballad or something of that sort.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from susan331 May 06 2005 - 19:07

Yeah, that's what you get for subjecting your auditory canal to Taking Back Sunday and Jimmy Eat World. On that note, ever hear of earplugs?

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from edMay 06 2005 - 17:39

Ok dude, next time you go to a show you can politely ask the security guard if the band will turn it down. Why did you go see Jimmy eat world in the first place?

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from ddMay 06 2005 - 08:42

earplugs are like condoms. dude, they totally suck. just turn it down. kinda like when you listen to music at home. do you turn it up far as it will go? or simply 'til ya kan hear the mix just right. music is supppose to heal you not hurt you. especially if you treasure music. i want my twenty dollars back from jimmy eat world and taking back sunday. they are insensitive musicians and as far as i decipher... cock rockstars and energy thieves. praise the one.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from eraserheadMay 05 2005 - 16:08

Earplugs are the answer. I started wearing them after I saw Catherine Wheel. My ears were ringing for days. Although it was an enjoyable ring.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from jeremyMay 05 2005 - 16:00

earplugs, my friends.....

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from brianMay 02 2005 - 21:38

the two most ear ringing shows i've seen were: Ministry @ lollapalooza in '92, i swear they turned them up a few notches louder than anyone else. and when i saw Coldplay on their first tour. we were right in front of the stage. made my ears rings for a week.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from Obvious GuyMay 02 2005 - 17:53

it might have something to do with the fact that both of those bands suck ass... loud or not.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from mplasterMay 02 2005 - 14:29

alex, you described the symptoms perfectly. too-loud live music sucks. the only exception being My Bloddy Valentine who i was (un)lucky enough to see back in like '92.

it was so loud that i peed blood for a week. or sumthin'.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from Seth HowardMay 02 2005 - 10:19

Yeah. I went to see two bands with electronic drums on Friday in a small club, and it was stupid loud.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from Alex NiedtMay 02 2005 - 09:10

I hear ya. Fucking ridiculous how loud concerts are mixed. There's absolutely no point whatsoever. It just makes the sound worse. The high frequencies are so harsh it's painful, and the bass is so big you can't hear any detail in the midrange. Even with good earplugs sometimes it's worthless...

Actually, I'm kinda surprised they're allowed to mix as loud as they do. You'd think they'd get sued by all the people who suffer hearing damage.

RE: live music too loud for the ears | from Tim E TussMay 02 2005 - 01:43

Sorry Donny, you'll have to speak up. What did you say again ?

too loud | from donny dwangoMay 02 2005 - 00:09

i went to see jimmy eat world and taking back sunday and it absolutely was horrible due to the fact that it was sooo loud my ears couldn't decipher anything. should music hurt your ears? next time i play i think i am tossing my amp into the crowd first.
