Favourite records here now: « baudelaire » by leo ferré (1957; 1967)
Instrumental chords are magical, sullen skies…
woman voice chorus line (like “il deserto rosso” where the character of giuliana told to comfort her son, a story about an ideal place) represents a real work of an artist and a high attention to come together sounds; well, “ciel brouillé” is a beautiful song.

Alex, It appears you and I are on the same page. I got the Smile DVD on Saturday, and watched it twice over the weekend. Certain parts almost brought me to tears. I've had the CD for like a year now, but I actually think the live performance on disc 2 of the DVD is superior to the CD.

About 9 years ago I "discovered" Pet Sounds, and for awhile I was completely obsessed with Brian Wilson. Now it seems I'm entering that phase again.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from Alex NiedtSep 25 2005 - 23:36

^Great Bauhaus song.

Finally got my own copies of Brian Wilson's "Smile" CD and DVD. Can't stop listening and watching. I listened to the whole CD twice during a long drive today, and I was about to cry in frustration and envy a few times because some parts are just that brilliant. I also hadn't slept in 36 hours, but still...

Other than that, I've been listening to my standard "sadcore" favorites which you can probably guess by now.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from cSep 06 2005 - 10:01

I agree Alex. When I heard last year that Brian Wilson was going to "finish" Smile, I cringed thinking about how lame it would be. I was very wrong. It's easily the best thing he's done since 1966. Sure the lyrics can be extremely corny, but the music/harmonies are unparalled.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from Alex NiedtSep 05 2005 - 21:46

Saw Brian Wilson last weekend and now I've been watching the Smile DVD. Most amazing music I've heard in a loooooooong time. Actually...probably one of the most amazing things I've ever heard, period. I can't imagine anyone ever one-upping this stuff.

so nice to get away from the oppressive din of the city. how did we let our urban environments get so loud and shrill?

In reading Alex's lists I always hear, somewhere in the back of my mind, that childish little ditty from Sesame Street:

"One of these things is not like the others, / One of these things just doesn't belong, / Can you tell which thing is not like the others / By the time I finish my song?

Did you guess which thing was not like the others? / Did you guess which thing just doesn't belong? / If you guessed this one is not like the others, / Then you're absolutely...right!"

:)

IDAHO - "Hearts Of Palm" and "Going On" from the slidingpast website. I love that song.

Red House Painters - "Rollercoaster" and "Down Colorful Hill"

Soul Whirling Somewhere - "The Great Barrier"

Gwen Stefani - "Love Angel Music Baby"

Thee Missouri - in Voodoo Rama. These guys are my labelmates on Blue Disguise - very cool noir-ish Americana with drum machines. They're from Germany and they're touring the States right now. I played with them on Wednesday and they were great.

The Stares - Spine To Sea (It's finally out!)

dk, you are right, I was purblind with lust -- the article is crap.

What I have been listening to of late:

Richard Youngs - "Sapphie"

Marissa Nadler - "The Saga of Mayflower May"

Picastro - "Metal Cares"

Jandek - "Worthless Recluse"

Hood - "Outside Closer"

The Remote Viewer - "You're Going to Love our Defeatist Attitude"

American Music Club - "United Kingdom"

I just think that if she wants to complain about incompetent music, she needs to write about the likes of Jesse McCartney (I think that's his name), Ashlee Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, etc. She is talking about pop music, after all, and she's picked two of the more competent bands in the genre to bitch aimlessly about. I don't think she gets the idea that pop music isn't prog rock, and it isn't supposed to be. You can't compare the two. And not all music is about virtuosity.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from dkJun 16 2005 - 09:49

Yeah, that, and she's kind of hot. Methinks you were reading with your groin.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from CodreanuJun 16 2005 - 00:35

Alex, I should mention that there are very few paragraphs of the article with which I am, in any sense, in agreement (the concluding sentence I find particularly objectionable*). What I find of especial interest, and expressed in the above piece by a mere, curt, sentence, is the ethical implication -- our social responsibilty in giving such untoward incentive to incompetence and questionable talent.

*while her screed might bear semblence to the standard "culture warrior's" emphasis on Classicism and Apollonian virtue, her closing remark reveals the extent of her entrenchment in the "Objectivist" wing of Libertarian thought.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from Alex NiedtJun 15 2005 - 22:05

That woman is a moron. "Bla bla bla...they use a computer to piece together songs." So does 99.9% of bands you fucking idiot! The whole article reeks of "I'm writing a bunch of completely obvious and irrelevant shit to show you how much I think I know about music."

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from CodreanuJun 15 2005 - 21:33

While one might quibble with her approach overall -- and certainly her positing of prog-rock as a sort of touchstone, if not merely rhetorical, is problematic -- this is, nevertheless, an interesting article.

New The Grand Opening EP!!!!! | from Alex NiedtMay 28 2005 - 18:56

I'm listening to the new "Location EP" from The Grand Opening (featuring this board's very own JR Olsson). It is sooooooooo good. Any fan of IDAHO would certainly enjoy this.

Go to http://itsatrap.com and download all of it. It's in the right top corner of the screen under the "Online Exclusive" heading.

Congrats Roger on a great EP. I hope you get distribution other than online. You deserve it. I want to buy a copy. Email me. Love the rerecording of "Get Out". Such a great song.

Coldplay are as good as Toad the Wet Sprocket (I'm serious!). Nice enough songs, pretty - but banal and obvious - melodies, good singer... but little in the way of substance or innovation. Their new single affirms what i was worried about: the band's run out of songs.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from Alex NiedtMay 26 2005 - 14:40

^I agree.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from CFMay 26 2005 - 13:28

Uh, just because Coldplay is popular doesn't make it bad...Parachutes as an album is f*ing brilliant, and the second CD is pretty strong, too. Their songs do not sound all alike...you must be hearing something I'm not. Let's face it, they were marketed well, and they are so damn good that the masses bought it. I am convinced this would happen to Idaho if they were played on the radio, too. anyway, IMO...

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from adamMay 25 2005 - 08:19

i think the best part about that new coldplay song is how INNOVATIVE it is. I mean... wow!!! It doesn't sound like ANYTHING in their existing catalogue at ALL!!! I'm sure this new record will be a TRHILLING DEPARTURE from the ONE SONG they've written OVER and OVER again on their first two records. VERY SURE!!!!! I also enjoy how the new song has absolutely NO FUCKING HOOK!! instead, it's just another mildly pleasant, vanilla chord progression with mr. paltrow's signature falsetto crooning over the top. real QUALITY STUFF. good thing it only took them like 8 YEARS to record this thing like 8 TIMES!!!

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from Alex NiedtMay 24 2005 - 23:09

The new Coldplay song "Speed of Sound" is awesome. I just watched the video of it on Yahoo. Reminds me of "Clocks", but it's sooooo much better. I hope the new CD is better than the last one. I have a feeling it will be.

Yes, Failure was Ken Andrews and Greg Edwards, after Failure broke up a few years ago, Ken did a solo project called "On" which I have not heard because I can't find a copy. Perhaps I'm not looking hard enough ;-) . Ken went on to Year of the rabbit which sounds very much like Failure's last album, and Greg Edwards released an amazing album with two new band mates under the name Autolux. If you like My Bloody Valentine or Sonic Youth, you love Autolux's 2004 release Future Perfect.

Errata: lest my reputation as a "pedantic dickwad" suffer, it occurs to me that Wurtzel was reading, instead, some trendy semiotic text. Same difference, right? Pardon me, I have not read this since publication. Can someone who has the book possibly look up the relevant passage, before I embarrass myself further? I think that I have had enough to drink tonight...or, maybe, just not enough. Oh well, I suppose that it is better to err on the side of excess -- oh my, with the subtle allusion to Blake I have just convicted MYSELF of fulsome pedanticism.

Pantsy, please post something nimbly sardonic (or about poo) to take the heat off of my indescretion.

Everytime I hap upon something of The Butthole Surfers, I can not help but think of the...erm, "accidental blowjob." And Wurtzel's reading Derrida on the beach is pretty repugnant as well. :)

I think I prefer the overall feel of the first album more, though. But you really can't compare the two. They're releasing a new album next month, as well.

RHP's rollercoaster is my favorite of all their tunes!!!! That song gives me goose bumps. The lyrics capsule a childhood summer of mine; it blew me away when I first heard it. Beautiful song.

I need to check out Alex' music.

I'm listening to rhp 'Rollercoaster' and Idaho 'Levitate'

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from AveryMar 02 2005 - 03:38

Alex; I respect your views. Any musician who has the balls to put everything the've got into very personal works and place them out there for critique deserves respect. I'm sure Fireworks is a heartfelt work. I guess I'm alittle more into the slowcore aspects or the experimental/abstract; whatever stimulates imagination and the desire to make music. For example, through your advice to check out mp3.com.au, I discovered 4 mp3's by THIS IS FOR YOU. They are outstanding. Have you heard their stuff?

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from Alex NiedtMar 01 2005 - 14:11

Andrew, those are the songs I keep listening to also! I can't stop. I can't wait til they come out with a full-length CD. I'm sure it'll be one of my favorite CDs.

Avery, to me songs like "Fireworks" are the definition of sadcore/slowcore. Or at least what I like about it. As gentle and beautiful as possible, completely heartfelt, slow of course, and sad, wistful, bittersweet music and lyrics. I like it with a bit of anger, too. But not always. Actually, now that I think about it, my stuff has some anger and sarcasm in there a lot of the time.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from AveryFeb 28 2005 - 03:15

Alex; Thanks again! Lost in Records had several cool songs. I checked out Glitchface's Jubilee and thought that was decent. Fireworks was too wimpy for me. I like melancholy (spelling?) and I like deep; but too much "sad" gets whiny and then, annoying, kind of like London Apartments. If sadcore has some angry in it; it works.

Other bands I've been listening to:
His Name is Alive (before they went blues), Stars of the Lid, Athema, The Books, VAST, Ester Drang, tons more.

Lots of good stuff on Epitonic.com

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from AndrewFeb 27 2005 - 18:31

Thank you so much for the Glitchface link. I've been listening to 'Fireworks' and 'Stargazers' and 'Jubilee' every moment I'm at my computer. I haven't discovered a good sadcore band in years. I can't even describe how good it feels.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from Alex NiedtFeb 27 2005 - 02:11

Noah Nichols (Confusion Ends.) has started a record label called Lost In Records. www.lostinrecords.com If you like the CE stuff, and if you're into ambient-type stuff, there might be some other bands you like. Right now, I'm listening to the band Glitchface. They're a bit different from the other stuff on the label. Complete sadcore/slowcore band. I really like it so far. Sounds/feels very real. The singer has this "about-to-cry" shake in his voice. Reminds me of early RHP, or more harmonically complex early low. www.mp3.com.au/glitchface

Dean, the singer's voice on London Apt.'s reminds me of that comedian from SNL who played the goth rock guy. Forget his name; but that's the face I see when I hear the vocals.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from AveryFeb 26 2005 - 04:21

Thanks to whoever left the London Apartments link. I checked them out. The music or instrumentation on Streetlights are Soldiers was really great, but that voice destroys it. In fact, that voice gets really annoying after two listens on any song. I kept Next Year. If they used a lower voice that didn't crack or whine as much, this music would be incredible. It's a shame. Jeff Martin; you're vocals on this band's music would be one hell of a good product!!

Dakota Suite's "This River Only Brings Poison" is the one CD that has gotten me through this week. I've probably listened to the song "Sand Fools the Shoreline" nearly fifty times just in the last few days. Most gorgeous thing ever. Buy the CD for five songs.

This evening, I've finally managed to get away from that and listen to Debussy's "Ballade", Confusion Ends' "Love/Real Life", a few tracks from Ida's "Will You Find Me?", and a couple tracks from Innocence Mission's "Glow" and Sarah McLachlan's "Surfacing".

I s'pose it makes me a lil bored. Too many effects maybe.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from Alex NiedtFeb 20 2005 - 21:38

Actually, I just listen to tracks 1, 3, and the one in 3/4 time with the lyrics "and each one will be better dressed than the last" repeatedly. I usually ignore the rest of the CD, but I find those three just so beautifully dark and wonderful. I keep forgetting that I own "Debridement". I've never even listened to the whole thing, I don't think.

Confusion Ends is so great, but he took all my favorite stuff down from the site. The album "Hello, I'm Noah" is good, but some of his older stuff is the most emotional music I've ever heard, totally on SWS level, but different. I really wish you could hear it. There's this song called "Very Truly"...the first 30 seconds just melt my heart away every time I hear it. Actually, I try not to listen to it because it makes me so damn depressed. But it's good stuff.

RE: What Have You Been Listening To Lately? | from CodreanuFeb 20 2005 - 19:56

Alex, thank you for the link to "Hello, I'm Noah." This is interesting material.

On another note, I never found the Rivulet's debut to be anywhere near as engaging as "Debridement." I do not know whether it is the songwriting so much as that cathedral ambience, the sumptuous echo that amplifies so thoroughly the numbing sense of horrowing disclosure. But I agree with something you broached on a different thread to the effect that this sort of thing, this style, can become overlaboured and redundant rather quickly --something like this observance always prickles when listening to Rivulets, and makes me consider this music provisional, regardless the degree of my captivation.
