"apricots to armagnac" is on the forbidden e.p.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from KernMar 02 2005 - 08:54

which record is Armagnac on ???
I never heard of that song.

My personal opinion is, that "Levitate" is the best song ever written. Hence it beats all other Idaho songs.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from brian in ctFeb 26 2005 - 23:48

only maybe (juggernaut)
stare at the sky (pure)
sound awake (sonic)
this cloud we're on (catharsis)
wondering the fields (innocence)
levitate (hope)
hearts of palm (fear)
skyscrape (loss)
crawling out (despair)
yesterday's unwinding (closure)
20 years (innocence lost)
for granted (the deadly trap)
clouded (distraction)
to be the one (challenge)
before you go (release)
stay'in out in front (alien)
orange (historic, atavistic?)

...the traps that i am deeply in
will ultimately do me in..............

Almost all of them!!! Anything from Levitate & Hearts of Palm is sublime! Thank you IDAHO for making music with substance and depth.

(1) Idaho 'Casa Mia'

(2) Idaho 'Levitate'

(3) SWS 'Nani'

(4) RHP 'Katy Song'

(5) RHP 'Grace Cathedral Park'

On the sws subject, there are a lot of sws songs without really synthy sounds. It just depends on what you're listening to. And you really can't just listen to jumbled mp3s on the internet. It just doesn't work that way. To Ron- if you don't like the music, at least go to http://www.soulwhirlingsomewhere.com/lyrics and read the lyrics starting with 'Hope Was' and 'Please Sennd Help'.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from RaztroFeb 19 2005 - 19:22

SWS and Dakota Suite, two of my top favorites.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from ronFeb 18 2005 - 14:10

there's a bad that we played with in cleveland that i think both you guys would dig a lot. we played with them and noticed right away that it wasn't a very consistent bill, which isn't a bad thing at all, but sometimes clubs are weird about it. they're called Decadent. we haven't played with them since then. i can totally respect what both you guys are doing, though. please don't get me wrong about that.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from Alex NiedtFeb 18 2005 - 09:04

Ron, I think you're gonna hate my new stuff. I'm guessing that Michael and I are trading positions a bit right now. I'm using so much electronic stuff, and his last new song, "So Much", was a rocker (I bet you'd love that song). It's on the his compilation, The Great Barrier. No "80's synth" at all. And the reason you hear SWS in my music is because we actually have kinda the same background, in that I listened to a lot of synthy 80's stuff (The Cure far more than Depeche Mode, though), and then I discovered RHP, AMC, IDAHO. So I kinda blend the two. Then when I heard his music, I was blown away by how he does a similar thing. So I latched onto it even more.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from ronFeb 18 2005 - 08:55

michael: i love the Mineral Tap song on Something Must Break. you have a great voice. and yeah, i can understand where you're coming from eventho' i come from pretty much the opposite background. i grew up listening to led zep, the who, Floyd, rolling stones, etc. pretty much any kid did who was in northeast ohio. like i said, though, i think it's good. it's well written and well performed... it's just a style thing. but i'm totally psyched to hear more Mineral Tap.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from cFeb 18 2005 - 05:56

Man, I love SWS. "Hope Was" is fantastic, "please sennd help" is even better (IMHO).

I think the fact that SWS is on Projekt records may turn some people off. Personally, I hate all that pretentious "goth" stuff. But SWS is not even close to that. I got into SWS after I heard "how to hang yourself" on a Projekt sampler I got for free some years back. That song stuck out like a sore thumb on the sampler. It blew me away, then I got "hope was", and I was sold. Admittedly, the lyrical content can get exhausting at times, but there's no doubt about the music. It's phenomenal.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from brianFeb 17 2005 - 22:47

i like both SWS & the Mineral Tap too and it seems Michael and i share a lot of musical influences and growing up listening to the synth/drum machine stuff. we're probably around the same age it seems. i remember first hearing about SWS from the Projekt Records site and it's true, a whole album is needed to listen to, not just a song or clips.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from mplasterFeb 17 2005 - 22:04

Hey ron,

you know, i think that is a reason a LOT of people who are into the whole "sadcore/slowcore" scene also hate my music; because of the electronic and synthetic elements of it. which i guess i understand, seeing as how most of the bands in that genre are way more acoustic and bare (AMC, RHP, Hayden, Idaho, bluetile, etc.) so i guess i understand how people feel a bit "mislead" into checking it out. i think lyrically or at least mood-wise/subject-wise it fits in, but apparently alot of ppl just can't get past the synthy side to see that aspect. which is fine, i guess; to each his own. but i can't really help it. i grew up on depeche mode and duran duran and all sortsa Eighty's electronic and such. and then in my teens getting into 4AD/Cocteaus/TMC/DCD etc i suppose only further secured that whole "soaked in reverb" thing into my songwriting. but maybe you'll like Mineral Tap. i'll be the first to admit it was a deliberate attempt to sound more bare and straight-forward, and although these days i AM taking a much more bare, up-front approach to vocals, i still can't seem to lose the lush, swelling synths. probably due to the fact that i still listen to tons of electronic/ambient stuff (namlook, global comm, aphex, vidna, etc.)

but i appreciate you taking the time to actually give it a chance. thanks.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from ronFeb 17 2005 - 20:35

so i gave another listen to SWS. and i still don't really like it. i hate the synth sounds and the drum sounds. way too 80's progressive sounding for my taste. but i totally love the dude's voice. i just wish it wasn't so bogged down with so much reverb and chorus or whatever else is on it. if the dude from the Mineral Tap is the same guy, i like the Mineral Tap stuff sooooo much more. so... yeah, i think it's just a style thing for me. it's good, but i just can't get into it. alex, i hear a lot of SWS in your stuff.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from glean gleyFeb 17 2005 - 17:56

I'm like the wet making of songs that are very smooth and lush. Like the idaho Three Mice to the winch.
I sense the tests of good tone will make everyone smell full and gizzard warmth.
Glean!
G;ean!

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from Alex NiedtFeb 17 2005 - 15:09

Codreanu, that's exactly why Dakota Suite gets on my nerves. The guy SUCKS at singing, but gets it right once in a while. And whoever he hires to play strings and brass usually sounds like high school orcestra and band members. If you have a sensitive ear to intonation, you will have a VERY difficult time listening to a lot of Dakota Suite. But "Leper's Companion" is one of my favorite songs, period. AMC's Tim Mooney and Bruce Kaphan play on it. And I really enjoy some other songs from whatever record that's one (This River Only Brings Poison, maybe?). I really like that song where he sings about the girl in the garden and keeps saying "I wish I was dead". The drummer is damn good; he plays really jazz-styled, which I always love. Although, he goes overboard with flourishes sometimes.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from ronFeb 17 2005 - 14:46

i don't know. maybe it's just a style taste or something. i mean, i'll give it another try for sure... and i'll try to remember what you all have said. it's just weird, though, because i never had to try to like Idaho or RHP or Low. i just liked them instantly, ya know?

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from JR OlssonFeb 17 2005 - 02:58

If I would find a SWS CD somewhere here in Stockholm I would of course buy it. But I have never seen one. I am not much for the MP3s, I need an album to listen to.

I got a couple of Dakota Suite records. I would like to like them but I have a hard time getting in to them if you know what I mean.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from CodreanuFeb 17 2005 - 00:40

It matters to me that SWS is only Michael, because you have a sense that he is profoundly alone in his music and it is honest in a way one can only be in solitude. So it is easy to trust, especially when so much of what he narrates accords so well with your experience. This is unbelievably intimate music, music that you do not merely feel so much as suffer --a suffering that is by no means masochistic, rather it is soaked with such an introverted aesthetic as to be rather consoling, even amniotic.

"This River only brings Poison" and "Alone with Everybody" are both nice albums by Dakota Suite. I can only take them a couple of songs at time though. Something about Hooson's vocals really overstays its welcome, if you know what I mean.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from brianFeb 16 2005 - 23:09

see, i've never liked AMC and very little of RHP. it's only been the last few years that i've liked LOW even, since i've been a fan of IDAHO so long. other bands that were grouped into the slo-core category just never appealed to me. it's very familiar reading Alex's post describing SWS, because i used to say that almost verbatim about Year After Year to people who just didn't get it or give it a chance.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from Alex NiedtFeb 16 2005 - 21:50

I just remembered: Ron, go to www.soundclick.com/soulwhirlingsomewhere and listen to "The Hook Through It" and "EveryFemaleWerewolfEverListedAlphabeticallyByCrime".

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from Alex NiedtFeb 16 2005 - 21:00

Ron, SWS isn't "them", it's just Michael. Except for a track or two with a drummer named Jason Farrell. What songs did you hear? Did you pay attention to the lyrics? I'm not sure what's not to get, especially if you've ever been in a painful relationship/breakup. Some of the most painfully intense, honest music ever written and recorded. Period. Listen to "Hope Was" if you haven't. It doesn't get more heartbreaking than that.

Rip, I dislike Dakota Suite with the exception of a few songs that I find very beautiful.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from RipFeb 16 2005 - 19:42

SWS is great. "In On" is one of my favs.

Idaho "Come Back Home", "Stare at the Sky"......

I thought you guys hated Dakota Suite. I see their name mentioned several times.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from ronFeb 16 2005 - 19:19

i'm not a big fan of SWS. i heard everyone talk about them and then when i heard them i thought maybe i was listening to the wrong band. i just don't get it.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from JTFeb 16 2005 - 12:39

Brian, I hear alot of Buffalo Tom in Glide, but alot of that is just that the singer, William Arthur had a similar voice( I say had because he passed away in 1999). It's hard to think of other reference points, it's just that Arthur was such an amazing songwriter, I highly recommend you track down any of their releases which are hard to find in the states. Try ebay or gemm.com :)

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from cFeb 16 2005 - 09:50

Yep, you can say that again! Oh yeah, you already did...

My favorite Idaho lyric is "avocados and grapefruits would do just fine, but tension building is hard work, so you need a cow".
Seems like a lot of people focus on the "dark emotional" side of Idaho (which is fine), but there's a sense of humor there as well.

MY favorite Idaho songs are Save, Get You Back, Scrawny, Jump Up, Tear, A Sound Awake, and many other.

As for a comp, any of the above songs would do, along with anything by early Swans, such as "Raping A Slave" or "Another You". Girls love that shit.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from JR OlssonFeb 14 2005 - 00:34

Fav songs changes all the time but I'll say 20 years, Jump Up, The sun is all there is.

I've been listening alot to Tarentel and The Innocence Mission lately.

Don't really know about the other songs to have on your comp. 'I broke my promise' is a really good one. And maybe New Holland by Early Day Miners. Idaho songs would be the above mentioned.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from Alex NiedtFeb 13 2005 - 22:59

If I remember correctly, that song's about Kathleen going back to Columbus for drug rehab.

Eitzel was an Army brat who lived in Columbus for awhile. "Outside this Bar," a great song from Engine, is about a bar in Columbus.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from sunny dom domFeb 13 2005 - 18:09

Eitzel is from San Francisco; same as Kozelek. I ran into him on Haight St in SF a week ago and he looked pissed off as always; I wanted to say "hello, Mark, love your music, keep it coming" but thought he would say "get lost". I later went home and put on Down Colorful Hill" and chuckled. Then I cried in my pillow, puked, had a piece of pizza, called it a night.

RE: Favourite Idaho songs | from ronFeb 13 2005 - 17:25

alex, good choices. i've been getting into AMC a lot more lately. mark eitzel plays in columbus a lot. someone said they thought he was from there??? i don't know much about them/him. is that true?

What's your favourite Idaho songs, guys?? Mine, at the moment are: Armagnac, forever and gone (but that changes daily)

And what are your two favourite bands other than Idaho (mine are AMC and R.Adams -- also changes frequently)?

If you guys had to make a 5 song compilation, two Idaho songs and three other, what would it be?

Mine: Gone, Armagnac, Revolving door (AMC), dreamin' (Loudon W III) and Amy (R.A)

P.S I'm asking all this cause I need help and suggestions making a mix for a girl (of sensitive and responsive ear) I'm trying to sway toward my tastes...
