RE: Red House Painters GAP commercial | from KCWJan 23 2001 - 08:21
Jon-
The song you're referring to is called "The Shining" from Badly Drawn Boy's "The Hour Of Bewilderbeast" CD. The whole album is excellent and highly recommended.

if it's more of a rocking song, it's probably the dandy warhols
Does anyone know who sings the song on one of those other GAP winter commercials... i think the lyrics were something like "Sun setting and suddenly you're in love with everything..."?????
i believe that would be badly drawn boy.
I'm not going to enter into the politics of the Red House Painters and Low being used on the gap adverts. However, in the UK they are screening several other Gap adverts, one using fairly predictable college rock and another using a pleasant alt-country type strum, does anyone know the identity of this artist?
First. Isn't this an Idaho site?
Second. There is nothing wrong
with self promotion. Although it
is the anti-christ's company.
At least they're starting to use decent music in commercials. Hopefully the artists can maintain control of how their art is used and get a fair $ for its use. If they plug the money back into the creation of more good music, we all benefit.
P.S. For those who haven't seen it already, Gap is also using Low's version of Little Drummer Boy in one of their Christmas adds.
yada yada yada
Music is a business. If it weren't, you wouldn't know about it. Shut up and enjoy it.
Personally, I'm a little sick of these kind of arguements. If I recall from the recent Devil in the Woods article, Island and Rick Ocasek split the proceeds from this song 50/50. Kozelek didn't see a dime from it.
Most likely, he had no say whatsoever in this matter. While you're at it, why don't you ask Nick Drake how he feels about having his song in a VW commercial? He's still dead as far as I know.
You can hem and haw all you want about your favorite music being used to sell crap, but the fact is most of the time the artist has little or no say, and I doubt very much if the Buzzcocks, Spiritualized, Kozelek, Drake, Stereolab, Iggy Pop etc.. would have ever dreamed that their songs would be used this way. Maybe they do (or would) object, and might not have signed the contracts they did if they would have known. Who knows. Who cares. It's a done deal.
When you get a free moment from picketing the evil GAP, why don't you ask the fellas in Death Cab if they mind being shamelessly exploited by a magazine marketed to teenage girls.
Uh... That would be a Volkswagen commercial, not Volvo...
Count Stereolab and the estate of Nick Drake among the recent recipients of "the long dollar."
If it puts food on the table and the artist doesn't lose artistic control, more power to him/her.
ok buddy live in a log cabin in the
middle of nowhere and only drink
rain water lately?
if not then you are supporting
brutal global conglomorates!
i think it's great when
musicans
sell there goods to make money
people can here their song's
and maybe buy their records
so they can continue to do
what they do best.
i nominate
"to be the one" for a volvo
commercial let's get the long
dollar in.
The Gap is hardly PC. They employ
sweat shop labour from third world
countries to make their garments.
I think it reflects badly on the
band, personally, to support a
company of such low human rights
standards.......that's me. I don't
subscribe to that indie "sell out"
theory, as long as the artist isn't
compromising his work for $$$.
Everybody's got to pay their bills.
I just disagree with supporting
such brutal global conglomerates.
Why not do the commercial. Esspecially if it gets more people into RHP. Why not be in Seventeen magazine. Exposure is a good thing. I don't think Mark is making a load of money for it anyway. Ric Ocasek from the Cars wrote that song.... Mark does work for a living. He's musician. Being a musican is not all about being as cool as you can be. Business happens... It helps you live your life. Does it cheapen the artist now that they are on TV? Is it really selling your soul to be heard by people? GAP clothes aren't bad. Seem to aim at being "P.C.". I am a musican and I work with kids. If I new I could pay my gas bill and not have it turned off and in return I get my music exposed across the states, I would do it.
Pretty cheesy, but nevertheless, I'll sit through the commercial to hear the song.
I get the feeling Mr Kozalek will do anything to avoid working for a living....
I heard about it too and nearly
croaked. Death Cab for Cutie had a
tiny article in Seventeen magazine
recently too. Ouch.
I only saw it once, but I thought it was pretty cool- cool visual with RHP's version of All Mixed Up in the background. Maybe the big Gap dollars will help get "Old Ramon" see the light of day soon!!!
Has anyone seen this yet? I heard about it from a friend, and it sounds pretty brutal....
