RE: Idaho starter album? | from chrisSep 28 2005 - 06:57

If i had to introduce someone to
Idaho I would offer him/her the
Forbidden EP (if it was still available...)
"It's not what it seems, it's exactly what you need"

perfect sentence.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from RossSep 22 2005 - 07:07

What exactly constitutes "gross video poker"?

RE: Idaho starter album? | from KernSep 22 2005 - 04:37

maybe Hearts of Palm would be a good starter. though I still think Levitate is the best album of all time, so he needs to know this one too.

just today I made a C90 Tape to introduce a friend to Idaho (actually I just finished it 20 Minutes ago - since I stumbled over this thread now I feel urged to post the tracklist)

A:
Skyscrape (yay)
Goldenseal (forbidden)
Social Studies (wwyantm)
Hearts of Palm (hop)
20 Years (lev)
Run but you ran (alas)
Basscrawl (forbidden)
To be the one (hop)
This Day (wwyantm)
Fuel (two)
Jump up (alas)
Stare at the sky (3sttw)

B
Wondering the fields (lev)
One Sunday (yay)
Only maybe (bayonet)
Pomegranate Bleeding (3sttw)
This cloud we're on (hop)
Still (two)
Scrawny (alas)
Happy Times (hop)
Rope (vc)
Casa Mia (lev)
Levitate (lev)
Apricots to Armagnac (forbidden)
Up for living (Live in Paris 2002)
? (Live in Munich 2004)

the last one is that "humpa song" - if anyone knows the title. it`d be cool to know.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from ronSep 21 2005 - 20:47

i second HOP. i think Alas would also be a good one. either of those two can't go wrong. it worked for me.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from JR OlssonJun 30 2004 - 15:00

hearts of palm

RE: Idaho starter album? | from AndrewJun 23 2004 - 14:46

'Levitate' or 'Three Sheets'.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from RossJun 21 2004 - 06:18

The Forbidden E.P. is pretty much perfect.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from CodreanuJun 20 2004 - 20:02

It would be of advantage, in tailoring a recomendation, for us to know a little something of your friend's musical tastes. For example: mainstream alternative = Three Sheets..., early 90's era; "grunge" = YAY, etc.
My humble recomendation would have to be Alas. In addition to being my favorite, its very brevity serves as a good introduction. Moreover, It would make a wonderful "acid test" in determining whether or not one "takes" to Idaho.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from ZebJun 20 2004 - 17:13

Definitly "Hearts of palm". No words for that album.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from Alex NiedtJun 20 2004 - 13:51

I think I'd go with "Alas." Or maybe "Levitate."

RE: Idaho starter album? | from ronJun 20 2004 - 10:14

i'm ashamed to admit it, but i don't own Alas or YAY. i've somehow managed to get those songs from other people. but either of those two would be perfect follow-ups to HOP.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from andiJun 20 2004 - 09:36

alas was the first album i ever heard by idaho. and it's still my favourite record of all time. so, if you are ready to blow the guy away... go ahead!

two weeks later you can just finish him off with HOP. the poor guy ;)

RE: Idaho starter album? | from gibbsJun 19 2004 - 10:27

i remember the first time I heard to be the one. I had just purchased the album in austin texas while on a road trip and nearly had to pull the car over when the song came on, it was overwhelming.

I think i agree with farmcafe on this one, an album in its entirety has a much greater impact than a comp.

For some reason i hadnt thought of alas, which is strange because "run but you ran" is one of my favorite songs. I think Alas shall be it.
Thanks for all the input everyone, I will be sure to relay my friends thoughts after he gets the cd.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from ronJun 17 2004 - 21:21

hearing Hearts Of Palm was enough to get me hooked. if it worked for me, it'll work for anyone. there's just something about putting a CD in and hearing "to be the one" for the first time. i nearly cried. and that's no joke.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from greenJun 17 2004 - 10:34

I would pick Alas. it's melancholy, but kind of playful, so it's really refreshing to me. I can listen to it all the way through in any season or mood. that or the forbidden EP. I would start with either of those two.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from farmcafeJun 17 2004 - 10:11

as i see it, some of the other suggestions here are aimed at a wholistic/full discography approach to the compilation concept. and there's certainly nothing wrong with that, but i don't think the anthology approach is nearly as enjoyable in actuality as it is in theory.

my suggestion would be to give levitate, hearts of palm, or three sheets to your friend. they're all incredible albums (i think idaho's music is best listened to in this format, each song connected to the next with a purpose; that's certainly just my opinion, however), and each would readily aclimate your friend to the idaho canon.

RE: Idaho starter album? | from m2Jun 17 2004 - 10:02

okay, okay, okay..... before everyone jumps in to point out how incredibly stupid i am..... "Bass Crawl" is from the FORBIDDEN E.P., not bayonet.

i stand corrected. my aplolgies for any confusion this may have caused you.

:)
