Idaho: Hearts of Palm [Idaho Music; 2000]
Fans of Jeff Martin follow him with all the fervency of the 12 apostles. This man of sorrows has his finger on something unique and beautiful, and he's been delivering his sad-rock gospel for over eight years, with all but the most marginal commercial success (even on an indie scale). In a fair world, Hearts of Palm would have been on every 2000 top 10 list. Like his peers, Martin's music is passionate and expressive. But Martin's stands apart in its intricacy; there's absolutely nothing lo-fi about it. Instead, Hearts of Palm, while sparse, is carefully composed and produced, without sounding contrived or pretentious. --Brad Haywood
