Gibbs, I'm with you on the stopping and listening thing. However, I've been an Idaho fan since the mid '90s, and I've come to the conclusion that people either get the music or they don't. It's an extreme thing. Most friends will just get bored and ask you to put Trail Of Dead back on. However, there are those *very* few folks out there who are just sucked right in after those first few lush, Deluxe-burnished chords.
Those few are the ones with a soul deep enough to get it.
hearts of palm, no doubt.
Yep. I agree with you about headphones, Gibbs. I actually have good luck with having other people listen to music. All of my friends (rich, spoiled, very fashionable kids), are so used to listening to whatever crap is popular at the moment that they are totally intrigued and shut up whenever I put music on in my car. Even ditzy, blabbermouth girls stop and listen to Soul Whirling Somewhere, RHP, AMC, Idaho, etc. The other day, I picked up this girl from her modeling job, and she was talking about some $200 jeans she was wearing. I put on Levitate, and she totally stopped talking and asked what band it was. I was amazed. However, my mom talks all the way through everything I play for her. She won't even consistently listen to my stuff. That truly pisses me off. "That's nice, Alex. Very pretty. So anyway..."
possibly the most annoying thing in the world - asking someone to sit for a minute and listen to a song and the person either speaks or gets distracted with something.
unfortunately, people that are willing to actually stop and listen to something giving it their full attention are hard to find. when I am introducing something to someone I usually say, "listen to with headphones" because with the headphones all the little intricacies can be heard.
i'm the same way, and i don't have many friends either. i always tell people if i give them a cd to check out (i very rarely lend cds out since so many people can't take care of items that they do not own, but i digress), do it when you are sitting down and can focus on it. not while in the car fighting traffic. not just being background music to your life or cleaning house or whatever. JUST LISTEN. turn off the tv or comp. focus. i hate when people say "oh you HAVE to check this out, HERE, this song's really cool, isn't it? blah blah blah BLAH" "what you think?" I respond. and inevitably is followed by "well, I like it". my wife would always put in something new, and start skipping around while i'm trying to listen to the album as a whole. (shakes head)
I agree Seth...nothing worse than trying to introduce someone to IDAHO and they start talking while it's on....I refuse to play it unless no one talks because I can't stand the thought of talking instead of hearing how amazing it is. I don't have many friends (maybe because of this?)...of course there is Chris, who doesn't talk during the music, but does force me to listen to just certain parts of songs over, and over, and over, and over...you get the idea.
The end of "A Sound Awake" always gives me a jolt. The way that song builds is just incredible.
I've made mixes for a few people, but I think if you're going to try to introduce someone to Idaho, the first thing they need to understand, is that they are really going to have to LISTEN, and give it some time. It's music that takes a while to sink in.
for a song to be called "rockin'" or to say a song "rocks" there must be a minimum level of criteria met: 01.) loud, raunchy, very appropriate guitar tone, 02.) in-your-face-bass, 03.) slamming, bashing drums, and 04.) screeching vocals. that having been said, i don't think a song like "alta dena", no matter how great it is, could be called a "rockin'" song.
my votes: 01.) TEETH MARKS, 02.)COME OVER, 03.) FLAT TOP, 04.)POMEGRANATE BLEEDING, 05.) and one other i can't remember the name to.
but i think TEETH MARKS or FLAT TOP take the cake.
ok, but i still don't agree with you. pick out some good songs from various albums so the guy will fall in love with the music. then he can discover it himself album after album. like i did. i downloaded 'much closer now' and the demo version of 'jump up'. then i within a short amount of time i bought all fullength albums.
yes JR..of course you "can" make a compilation if you like, but my point was---if you make one, you are undoubtedly leaving off a masterpiece, which your friend in turn will miss out on---so why bother?? Go for it Gibbs...spring for all of 'em and if your friend doesn't like it than what kind of friend is he anyway??? (kidding, sort of)
alex is right about "3 sheets".
i don't agree with denise at all. of course you can make an idaho compilation.
I'd go with Three Sheets as an intro for your friend. I think it's a bit more well-rounded than Levitate and will give your friend a taste of the "classic Idaho sound."
denise-
I have come to that same conclusion and am now teetering between "Three Sheets to the Wind", and "Levitate" for an intro to Idaho for my friend.
Crawling out.
I still don't like Levitate LP apart from the title track. Big bummer.
gibbs...forget it...it's no use. you need to just go out and get every single album and give them to your friend. there is no way to make a compilation without leaving something amazing off of it...not worth it
Flat Top

I was putting together a Idaho compilation for a new listener the other day and realised that it was better to just burn him the "Levitate" album in its entireity.
As far as fav. idaho song goes, right now I been really into the acoustic track on the shanti project album, cant remember the name but the song is gorgeous.
can anyone suggest a tracklist for an Idaho compilation, I would be interested to see what others might include.
The Worm.
it's gotta be flattop, but "we were young and needed the money" has a few other contenders as well.
