Nitpicking... He's bisexual. He was in love with Kathleen Burns for years and wrote most of AMC's songs (and a bunch of solo stuff) about her until she died of a drug overdose a few years back. "Anything" and "Without You" on The Invisible Man are about her death. I read the biography too. It's great for any fan.
"Steve, I always knew" - bit of a giveaway there.
Er, rob, Mark Eitzel's gay. Didn't you know? He talks about it in Sean Body's biography of AMC.
AMC - the early stuff tends to be more straightforward instrumentation-wise, and from Everclear on things get more "atmospheric". My preferences: Everclear, Engine, United Kingdom, Mercury, California. Not crazy about San Francisco and Restless Stranger.
Galaxie 500 - On Fire, Today, This is Our Music (though it's well worth it to just buy the box set and have it all).
funny init? everyone that likes AMC has almost utterly different views of each album!!
I really love SF. It's the one i can always listen to all the way thru. I ALWAYS skip Challenger on Mercury for example. my mate that introduced me is a big fan of the earlier stuff. tho he does like the later a lot too.
still... we're off to see Mojave3 in sept in london. get yerself to www.mojave3online.com and download a track off the new album.
great band.
(oh and very wet and lefty too, but not remotely homosexual, to the best of my knowledge)
I think that was Jeremy Shockey.
Oh my god: I've just read the rest of todays posts! What kind of sad tosser have we got ourselves here??
Joe: go fuck your mother some more!
And guys: thanks for the advice.
who cares about yur stuopid stuff. what names amc? whine whine wnine. complaint rock bla bla bla. feeling sorry for u.
I don't recommend San Francisco. There's a reason why it's the band's last. Everclear, Mercury, and Engine are my favorites, and California is just on the fringe. United Kingdom has a few songs I like. I'm not crazy about The Restless Stranger.
I like most of the solo stuff, though West doesn't click for me. I saw Eitzel on The Magnificent Seven Tour with Peter Buck, etc. and thought it was fairly bad.
I agree with Seth re Caught in a Trap. And I love Invisible Man and Songs of Love (live). 60 Watt Silver Lining is my next favorite. Music for Courage and Confidence was a big disappointment for me.
Engine was the first AMC CD I heard, which may explain my fondness for it. Much like Year After Year.
Jesus Christ Alex!
I admire your knowledge on bands, as i know you buy obscure stuff as much as you can, i'm curious about the collection you have stacked at home.
cheers!
AMC- "Everclear", "Mercury", "San Francisco", "California"... Eitzel Solo- "60 Watt Silver Lining", "Invisible Man", "Songs of Love Live", "Caught in a Trap and I Can't Back Out 'Cause I Love You Too Much Baby"... Whatever you do, avoid "West" at all costs. And definitely don't start out w/ "Music for Courage and Confidence".
The later AMC stuff is better, but I much prefer Eitzel solo.
"West" is kind of lame, but it think "Caught in a Trap" is totally brilliant. On the songs where it's just voice and guitar, it's so intimate it's almost confrontational.
You can get all of Galaxie 500's albums as a box set for cheaper than buying them separately, but if you do buy them separately, I'd start with "On Fire".
for galaxie 500 there's a collection called The Portable Galaxie 500 - lovely design too. tho it's prob better to get the albums
i'd recommend everclear 3rd behind Mercury & San Francisco (the most commercial sounding release, an easy way in i'd say), and not to avoid (eitzel solo)"music for courage..." and also (eitzel solo)60 watt silver lining is kewl too.
ain't musical taste a mad thing eh?
Avoid Solo: "Caught in a trap" & "west"
Avoid AMC: the earliest stuff (sorry those that like it, but for me they only truly sounded like their own band on everclear onwards!)
yea. thanks for the tip. i need to find some music by them/him also. and galaxie 500.
get "everclear" (AMC) or "invisible man" (eitzel). avoid "west" and "music for courage and confidence".
So what would you recommend as a foot in AMC LP?? And which to avoid? All this Mark Eitzel talk has made me curious.
Well? I'm UK based - me mate got a mail from Eitzel about an American Music Club gig in the US (where escapes me -it's on markeitzel.com anyway) - so if you go (or if it's past, if you have gone) let us know how it was!
