RE: Iraq | from Ted TurnerApr 03 2003 - 07:03

It does indeed....Eventhough I sold that shitty network.

RE: Iraq | from rupert murdochApr 02 2003 - 13:25

it makes the news more interesting though, doesn't it?

RE: Iraq | from edApr 02 2003 - 12:40

I think the media is turning SARS into some type of Ebola outbreak when it isn't even close. You have to have prolonged exsposure to the infected person (ie healthcare worker) and the only people it is deadly for are people with low immune systems (ie. the elderly). Sure that is tragic but I don't think this is as worse as the media makes it out to be. If there is anyone to blame for it is the people who abuse anti biotics. Like taking them when they have a simple cold. And not finshing the perscription til the end. So these modern viruses occur.

RE: Iraq | from JeremyApr 02 2003 - 07:32

Hi, it's Jeremy in Toronto & I'm personally coming to visit each & every one of you. Seriously, the SARS thing is terrible, and since it began in the sizable Asian community here (brought by someone from Hong Kong via Beijing, I believe (or visa versa), there are all kinds of, dare I say it, Kafka-esque extrapolations happening - business at Chinese restaurants is way down, apparently Asian students have being shunned, as in some cult punishment - all kinds of weird shit that we've seen before in history or that seems like some awful parable about pestilence or a symbolic story of prejudice and persecution. Anyway, it, and Iraq, are the main stories here.

To give those of you who are not Canadian, and interested, a brief perspective on the War On Iraq, as we call it here in Canada: the Canadian govt., majority-held by the Liberal party, showed some guts (because 80% of our trade is with the way bigger U.S. - and came out against the war, even though we have 30+ soldiers serving in Iraq as part of ongoing exchange programmes , and we've also got a couple of ships guarding the Persian Gulf, though the govt. insists this is not supporting the war on Iraq but the war on terrorism...they just happen to be guarding the other ships of the coalition of the bribed and intimidated (ooops, showing my colours!). Anyway, the people here are split pretty evenly, with maybe 60% against the war, and 40% for, and with more support in the west, which is traditionally more 'American' for a bunch of reasons, and least support in Quebec, who traditionally don't like to get as involved much in foreign wars. The Alliance Party, a Western-based right-wing Republican-clone party, is all for singing God Bless America, and Bombs Away!, the left-wing New Democratic Party were opposed to the war, even if U.N. sanctioned, as were the Quebec-based Bloc Quebecois party. The slightly right-of-centre Conservative Party were, well, it wasn't clear to me exactly, but only wanted to go if part of the U.N. (I think). The business community, fearing loss of business, and being generally pro a boundary-less global economy, by and large are pro-American on this one (despite the fact that the U.S. tries to bully us on various trade issues like softwood lumber). The U.S. Ambassador carried a message to the public and the Cdn. govt. in a speech here recently about how 'disappointed' the U.S. was that we weren't supportig our good and traditional friends and allies in the U.S. and how the U.S. would always support Canada if we were threatened (not to quibble, but it seems he forgot WWI and WWII, in both of which cases we fought for over 2 years before the U.S., for its own self-interested reasons, joined in). I figure it's the Ambassador's right to say what he wants (though it helps if it's accurate) but his speech provoked a huge controversy here, both pro & con. The latest brouhaha inspired by the war happened at the Toronto Blue Jays baseball home opener the other day. Apparently Major League Baseball, headquartered in the States, issued an edict that all its clubs play God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch. I guess they either weren't aware that Toronto & Montreal are in a different and sovereign country, and one that doesn't officially support the war, or else they just don't care. Anyway, the Blue Jays owner, went along with this, and the fans, by & large, were acquiecent (though whether because they agreed politically or because they were being polite, is unclear. Personally, I thought playing it was pretty inappropriate, given all the circumstances and our own govt.'s stand.

Sorry this was so long but, on the other hand, now you can amaze your friends with this detailed arcane knowledge of the Canadian situation vis-a-vis the present conflict in Iraq!

RE: Iraq | from JBApr 02 2003 - 00:28

Yeah, I am .

RE: Iraq | from DanielApr 01 2003 - 21:38

Isn't anyone more afraid of SARS than Sadam? ....especially in the Toronto area?
In the southern US, the media "threatens" americans with the impending onslaught of the rare, uncurable respiratory disease... WHAT DO YOU THINK?!!

RE: Iraq | from UN Food Relief Pilot JacksonMar 28 2003 - 06:38

Sorry achmed. Next time we will drop devil dogs, twinkies and mars bars. Hopefully we'll kill some more of you little bastards!

RE: Iraq | from new testesMar 28 2003 - 06:17

Yeah, well, taking that approach, FUQUE the damn Americans, too (not you of course....just the govt.). Brings to mind the Biblical stricture, "Do under others as you would have them do unto you."

RE: Iraq | from meMar 27 2003 - 22:02

Sorry scoobidoo, I actually didn't realise that....but still---FUQUE the damn French(not you of course...just the govt)

RE: Iraq | from achmedMar 27 2003 - 18:41

You Americans dropped tootsie pops from planes on my country, Afghanistan, as part of what you Yanquis called 'relief aid', but they fell and hit my son, Yasmul, and killed him. Now I hold hate for you close in my heart. We will bring more than tootsie pops back to you, my friends, and no matter how many licks, it will bring no relief.

RE: Iraq | from AlexMar 27 2003 - 16:14

I tried licking a tootsie pop to the center once in elementary school, but it was way too tedious and eventually infuriating. I've never met anyone who can do it without severe tongue fatigue.

RE: Iraq | from marqMar 27 2003 - 04:00

well that fuqing told you...

RE: Iraq | from scoobidooMar 27 2003 - 02:54

As you should know, Iraq is spelled "Irak" in french, and many others country. I'm not american, but I love this country so diversified...

RE: Iraq | from meMar 26 2003 - 19:51

scoobidoo...please tell me you realise Iraq is spelled I-R-A-Q...not I-R-A-K??????? This has really been bothering me...thanks

RE: Iraq | from micahMar 26 2003 - 19:19

mr. owl, i think that there are probably a combination of variables in determining how many licks it takes. i haven't had a tootsie-pop in several years, but when i did i used to suck on them. licking them seemed too tedious. suck and then bite was my strategy. is there anyone here that actually tried to take licks the whole way through and figure it out?? i think the answer to the tootsie-pop, mr. owl, may take even longer than trying to find the answer of life, so i'd try to figure out life first.

RE: Iraq | from Mr. OwlMar 26 2003 - 13:16

Q:How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie-pop?

A:Ahhhhhhh, one of my all time favorite candies brings up an important debate...does a tootsie pop in fact NEED to be licked or can it be bitten and crunched right up???? I find myself lingering on this question and must find the answer to the tootsie pop and while im at it, life! So what do you think? How many licks does it take? 5, 10 100??? does it depend on the person??? oooooooooooh, or does it have to do with the action of the person's tongue????

RE: Iraq | from scoobidooMar 26 2003 - 08:39

you've forgotten a question :

RE: Iraq | from lt. bill calleyMar 26 2003 - 08:17

oh. well, ok, if you put it that way...kinda hard to get my head around that. I'd just been figuring, ya know, Saddam=evil-doer, us=gooder-doer. Gonna have to think about all this now. Thanks. And, like I've been telling everybody for years, I'm really sorry about, you know, that Vietnam thing, ok?

RE: Iraq | from marcMar 26 2003 - 07:20

I think his point is, that no matter how guilty saddam is of various charges proffered against him, the british and american governments, and every other government in the world is at least partially culpable in these, and many other crimes.
